[serious] Adventure Games (PC)

I really like adventure games but I haven't played on in a really long time.
I've played all Monkey Islands, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Grim Fandango (my favorite), all Leasure Suit Larries, and some really old ones like Day of the Tentacle, Simon the Sorcerer etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions on good ones that they have played (old and new games alike)?

EDIT: Also, I just remembered I played Neverhood, a very nice game.

I remember "Freddy Farkus" from back in the day. It was made by sierra and created by the same guy who made the Larry games. The humor was more fart jokes and racial stereotypes then sexually explicit. Kinda fun if you want to check it out.

I never did beat it, my parents always sent me to military school. The furthest I got was pushing my sister on the swing in the backyard (I was 12 or 13 the last time I played, pretty sad I remember that at 23).

I've been googling around a little and I stumbled up on the series like Myst (1 to 5), Uru, Syberia (1 and 2). They all seemed to have good review score. Anyone played them?

But, not to steer the discussion only on those games, if someone played any others I'd love to hear about them.

I played the original Myst, really good at the time. It was the "premiere program to showcase the true power of the power macintosh." The game's concept was way over my head at the time though. Lots of puzzles and mindless moving between frames trying to figure out what you forgot. Keep a notepad ready.

I remember when my friend and I were playing Simon the Sorcerer (we were 13 at the time) and internet was not as available. So we had to go through gaming mags who published walkthroughs for a game in every issue, so we wrote asking for this game

I never got past saving the frog from the kitchen. Unfortunatly I cant remember how or why the frog gets there. I pretty much forgot the story.

I've played all the above. Loved every one of the Myst series.
Syberia's were both pretty poor, stunning graphics but really bad game play. Not very challeging puzzles but lots of hunting around the screen trying to spot cursor changes=[groan]

How is the story in the Myst series? I suppose it is connected. Would you suggest to start from the first one, or play any one at random?

I think you should start with the first one as there is a (somewhat) continuing story arc. Having said that, each can be played independantly and Myst will probably look a little dated, graphically that is, but still a great game.


BTW - I loved Grim Fandango too

I'll start at the begning. I'm not one of those people that only like a game if it is new.

I played GF a few weeks ago, I had to get a patch for XP (it kept poping out to Windows on the bridge that goes to the Tatoo guy).

If you want a game with a story... I don't know if Myst would be the best pick... There is a story, but it's all text based. You'll see what I mean when you play it. I won't ruin anything.

Fate of Atlantis was pretty good, if you can find it and get it to run.

King's Quest and Police Quest if you want to see just how bad things were...

I always head full throttle was good, never played it though. I like Alone in the dark quite a bit, although now it probably looks really dated.

Not so much an adventure game, but I've just been playing Red Alert 2 again. I suck balls at it but it's a lot of fun.

I dont know why, but I felt sad too. I didnt like that it was over. I played it about 5 times now, and the feeling is always the same. You feel so conected to the characters like you are with them. And the voices are excellent.

Myst series - Very good with puzzles that were pretty taxing.
Prince of Persia - The new Two Thrones is the best one
Final Fantasy - Final Fantasy X is the best one but it's an aquired taste and you WILL need help from the net as it's huge
Neverwinter Nights - Bit dated now but was really good. Get the gold edition with the two expansion packs (it's also free to play online )

Here. Don't forget that it has copy protection in the form of those Sunstone and Moonstone combinations on the pages of the manual...


Sam and Max was a classic, although actually I think Fate of Atlantis was my personal favourite.


Also, Beneath A Steel Sky was pretty good - that's actually Freeware now. You can download it here, along with Flight of the Amazon Queen and Legends of Kyrandia...

Lost vikings was, I belive a platform game. Three vikings with different abilites, you can choose which one to control. A very nice old game.

Subsequently, there was Fury of the Furries, which was Most Entertaining, and also a platformer.

Story-wise yes, I most definitely agree but the graphics are far out-dated.

If I had my way I would want them to release Final Fantasy 7 - Part Two for the PS3, but they won't. Trying to see Advent Children as that is the next part in the series...and let's be honest, Sephiroth was the best villain I've ever fought. He was cool!

My characters ended up being too strong, so the battle with Sephiroth was pretty boring . He had some pretty good attacks though

Yeah, same here. I cast Knights of the Round (the strongest summon) and that finished him off

Damn right except not WAS, IS, Final Fantasy VII IS the best! i am a proud owner of ff I,II,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII,IX,X,X-2,Tactics Advance, and have played Crystal Chronicles, and without a doubt VII is the best and as you are saying its an acquired taste i would have thought ud have enough experience to handle 10 without help from the web, VIII is more difficult and you should have a look at some of the really early ones where its impossible to figure out what ur doing some of the time!

Could finish any of them without help but I like to see as much of the game as possible and to find all the secrets alone is NOT possible. Knights of the Round in 7 I never would have found it same as Anima/Magus Sisters in 10 and Gilgamesh/Odin in 8.
