Re: inetrnet suicides
If people kill themselves over something on the internet, they wouldn't have survived long in this world anyway..

Killing yourself is a scary thing. When you have people supporting you and who will go the whole way with you, the task is easier.

Re: inetrnet suicides
I dont think the internet is the problem. The real problem is that there are so many people that are considering it (suicide). The internet just provided means for them to get together and do it. If it did not exist they maybe would not kill themselves, but the problem would still reamin.

Re: inetrnet suicides
From experience, I can tell you that they're worked like dogs. (A harsh euphemism, but it boils down to the same thing) Success and failure have different meanings in that culture, imbibed into the children at an early age. As a result, a general way of life can be looked upon differently.
You might be happy being able to get 2 meals a day living in your trailer, but some might actually consider that a good enough reason to cease living.

I'm here and I see, that they are too uptight even in their normal daily tasks...
Honor is deeply rooted in their culture. Lose that and you'd have lost your reason for living.
But good news though! despite my lenght of stay here I am not yet Japanized in that way! so I don't have suicide thoughts yet, no matter how hard they work me here.

No, I don't think so, it's more than just having work. They value work here that much yes. But most importantly to be able to support oneself and family, to be not a burden to anyone. well that is ONE of the reasons. hehehe it is not just with regards to work I think, I cannot really describe it. I just think that sometimes they are too uptight.
In fact, the place I am at is SOO quiet it gives me the creeps sometimes. No violence, no shouting between neighbors or even shouting inside homes(petty quarrels), no nothing but peaceful bliss. And so me coming from a not so peaceful place, you can call it from the slums even, LOLz, did not bother to keep that in mind and would drum on the table and tapping my foot on the floor while listening to music... Our downstairs neighbor (a japanese man) got flustered and went to knock on my door and asked me to stop the noise. ... and this happened twice. BTW, I don't do that anymore now !
They live in this kind of silence, order of things, maybe they derive honor from that too. And if somebody tips the balance it might just sent them packing for kingdom come or worse turn on me!!! OMG I did not think about that one!!! I don't want to be a victim of a WOULD be otaku killer!
Just kidding, On a more serious note though not all japanese people are like that, there are some though that is caught up in this honor-driven mentality, while some have embraced the enlightened way of thinking. I'm sorry if I annoyed anyone reading this, I did not mean to be offensive.

Re: inetrnet suicides
I think if somebody doesn't have the guts to kill themselves without others helping, they deep down didn't really want to die, the instinct of survival was still in their heart, if only small, there was still reason to live.
Internet or no internet, doing it in a group is definetly the wrong idea, it is like a cult, or like peer pressure. It is a very sad thing.

Or they wanted to see and assure themselves that there are people that feels the same way as they do, and would take that leap with calmer hearts.

Anyways, I've always wanted to go t Japan, either to study or to do business. They seem like the Tech-Capital of the world. Probably because the employees there are pressused to the point of suicide.
What are DDR's?
i dunno about tech-capital though, the laptop i use, and the desktop pc I use are all low-end, 1GB celeron pc's... they tend to hold on to legacy systems/software.
maybe if I were in Tokyo, I could experience really tech savvy people. :S

Meh, I even see "regularly" Windows XP and/or MS advertisements or Sponsorship on Local TV. In Phils we don't have that.

*pats litlewiki's back* its ok to be scared... but really, it's not that bad, those are the old traditions, suicides are everywhere and of course there are peculiar eccentricities everywhere... I mean EVERYWHERE. LOLz. It would be scary if my neighbors where Thieves and Goons, and truth is I DO live among those kinds of people but even that it not so scary. (Honestly)
There are indeed many negative sides to a race but of course there are many many many positive sides to be perceived too. You just got to have an open mind and not get carried away by just a few demeaning reports.
