Why is the C# forum so quiet?

Considering that C# is more popular than VB.NET, (as they would have us believe, at least), why are there fewer posts in the C# forum?

I am wondering if it is because the C# forum is positioned down there, while VB.NET is up ^^ there. I cannot think of many reasons for this, but would like to know why.

PS: If you are going to reply to this thread, DO NOT start comparing C# to VB.NET or any other language. This one's about the forum.

It could be that this is Visual Basic Forums

That and there's two links to VB.Net on the main page. C# only has one.

Re: Why is the C# forum so quiet?

I would think that because of the name of the web-site most of the people think that it is all about VB and nothing about C#. So they go to other web-sites.

One thing that can be done is that put links to C# forum in everyone's signature and other websites that link to VBF. That way we might get some more traffic.

    Or else SPAM.

So the name makes a difference?

Yes, I suppose you're right... I guess staying here for so long has made us immune to this fact.

Its because I have not learned C# yet.

We could rename the site to VB/C# Forums.

    Or .NET..

I think the fact is that if you do a search on VB then you get this page high up, but for C#, then you won't get it that high. And also most VB6 member went over to VB.NET for some odd reason in stead of C#.

We should have VB.NET as the second forum right after the FAQ forum. Then Classic VB forum.

This topic did come up earlier. What I notice though, is that there are still more visitors, on average, at any given time, in the Classic VB forum than there are in the VB.NET forum.

We should wait until VB.NET overtakes VB6 in terms of popularity and usage before doing that. Although I know, JM decides these things, but my 2 cents are worth more than an insurance policy.

    I agree.
And then C# immediately after VB.NET.

I think we should move Classic VB to bottom and bring latest ones to Top. That would increase traffic on other Forums too.

Maybe the placement of the links is the reason why we have more number of visitors in Classic VB forum than in VB.NET Forum.

I think this is the time when we should think of re-organizing the Forums.

I didn't notice that ever. I hardly look at the front page.

But can't we have a category .NET in which we can put all the stuff related to .NET, VB.NET, C#, ASP.NET, etc.

We DO have that category of its own, except that's somewhere near the bottom/halfway down the list.

Why would you move most popular forum (doesn't matter what it is really) down below ??? Explain that to me.

The traffice is picking up in C#. In fact, it is picking up quite a bit, and there is nothing wrong with the forum section arrangements that I can see.

If someone can't find the correct section to post their question in, then they probably have a problem larger than the question itself.

This was not about questions being posted in wrong forums or we not knowing where to post the questions, or even we not knowing were the forums are.

The thing is that VB6 is old and VB.NET is new, in demand right now. So having Forums arranged according to the order of fame would be better. That way traffic will increase in all the forums. Atleast this is what I feel.

Because eventually VB.NET is going to pass Calssic VB in trafffic. Its getting real close already and we would want to cater to the higher traffic forum.

VB6 is old and outdated. VB.NET and C# are newer and , shall I dare say it, more popular and powerful.

Re: Why is the C# forum so quiet?

How 'bout a sister site on .NET ?

If you search google by "VB Forum" or "VB.NET forum", VBF in the one of the top. But if you search by "C# forum" or "C Sharp forum" or "CSharp forum", VBF is nowhere to be seen.

Most new members comes from google I guess. If we start a new site on .NET, I'm sure in just a few days it will be on top of google list.

I hope we'll get .NET experts from both VBF and Codeguru. Which will make the new site the top .NET site on earth.

We can even copy/merge current codeguru and VBF .NET forums in it. (if that is possible).

As a .NET newbie, I think VB.NET is much closer to C# than VB6. Putting VB6 and VB.NET in same group doesn't help much. If someone is stuck in a problem in VB.NET/C#, they will not hesitate to use code from other .NET languages. But how many VB6 users will be happy to do a .NET to VB conversion ?

    Please consider this.

I didn't say anything about anybody posting anything in the wrong forum section. That is going to happen regardless of what order the sections are in. My point was that C# is picking up.

Also, what in the name of everything that is good and holy makes you think rearranging forum sections is going to increase traffic? I find this laughable.

Re: Why is the C# forum so quiet?

....in addition to my previous post i want to say that, we don't have a separate Database section.

But IMHO, it will be much easier to find a .NET database question if it had a separate forum. (Yes. I know it has been discussed already. )

Basically what I've understood so far about .NET is, the languages are so much inter-related that we must know (at least at beginner level) other .NET technologies too.

I never thought Java will be related to .NET in any way, but recently found a tip where the poster advices to use J# string library from C#, as it is much more powerfull.

    Conclusion,
Please make a new site/forum where .NET technologies are kept together and threads easier to find. And the site/forum must be found easily from google by typing ovious .NET keywords.

I actually never meant what you understood.

Anyways, what I was trying to post is that .NET is the way to go and Classic VB 6 is slowly being replaced either by VB.NET or C#. So it makes sense to have those Forums on top.

Someone has posted that this is VB Forum and that is the reason why we see less traffic in C# forum compared to other VB forums. This is the same thing that I had written in my first post in this thread.

    It's all about advert $$'s - right?

    31 viewing Classic VB - that's king
    19 in VB.Net
    12 in DB
10 in chit chat (obviously why they retain it in the first place!)

I don't see anything being changed based on those stats!

Re: Why is the C# forum so quiet?

One thing I could think is that when a member has a problem in C# then he may look at the VB.Net section for any solution then just convert it if there is any...

Or perhaps will just post the problem in VB.Net section then just convert it to C# afterwards...

Or perhaps not many has realized the value of learning C#?

Exactly, that's the risk when using a programming language name as the Site name. C# Forum here, will catch many 'already members' attention, but if I wouldn't be a member of VBForums, and I'm learning C#, I would think that there are much better choices for me than a VBForum.

Um.... I don't see how advertising has anything to do with why VB is more popular on a Visual Basic forum than C#. The obvious answer is the one in the second post -- that the name of this forum is VB not C#.

Having said that, let me say that the debate on whether VB.NET or Classic VB should come first has come up a couple of times. The order and focus of the forums is based on what is decided by me and those reporting to me (such as the mods). These decisions have nothing to do with advertisers. Rather they are based on what makes the most sense, but also working to disrupt the forums as little as possible. Changing the order of the subforums is disruptive to those that are use to the current order.

We've avoided changing the order up to this point to keep things consistent. You guys know where things are right now, so if we change the order it will only mess you up. We will, however, need to revamp the order at some point to be better aligned with what is popular and such. Maybe we are close to that time now.....

Re: Why is the C# forum so quiet?

    Brad,

My post wasn't directed at that question...

It was directed at the "re-order" the sections of the forum posts. I assumed that since this was a VB "named" site and that VB links were up top and that those VB sections had high "viewing" counts that might be important to that statistics that you give to your advertisers.

I've actually got no clue how you all get the advert's here
