Eh... looks like Bush realized what century it was, however, too little too late. Hhe singlehandly destroyed the Republican party's chance for gaining the presidency in 2008.

Hmmph. Well it's talk for now. Until I start seeing policy changes, it is nothing but talk. But I still see it as a positive step that it is at least being addressed. If it gets people talking it can only help.

When someone is an alcoholic, or addicted to heroin, the first step is to stand up and say "I'm a <whatever>"

Bush has now stood up and said (paraphrased) "I'm on oilaholic"

It is, as you say Cander, the first and smallest of steps, but I see it as significant; Bush is now rapidly coming the end of his term; I can see him focusing on philanthropy rather than war to mitigate decisions which at best have been dodgy.

There are not many democrats out there that are very electable either. My early bet is McCaine(sp?) beats out Clinton next election.

A little known fact. George Bush has allocated more government $$$ towards alternate fuel research than any other US president ever has. He did it in his first term as well.

Bush is saying oil is now a threat to the US national security as it comes from the middle east. If thats what it takes for them to do something about the envrionment then I'm all for it

I'm thinking he's probably planning on burning more coal. I'm not exacty sure if that does much for cleaning the environment. China and India will get oil cheaper and just burn more anyway. I'm afraid we're screwed until the planet runs out of fossil fuels. Hopefull the planet can sustain that abuse.

First we kick the oil addiction, which should happen within our lifetimes.

Then we declare war on the smaller countries which are still using oil, because kicking the oil addiction is our next step towards freedom. And if we use oil, then the terrorists have won.

I'm really currious to know how will US break it's addiction to oil. By spending more money on alternative energy technologies? Technologies that are already in use in Europe? Why not start developing them?

You know, I have this believe, that as long there will be drops of oil left in this earth, we'll all be prisoners of the oil companies. They won't let us break the addiction. You know last year Exxon Mobile had the biggest profit in corporate history (36 billion dolars). Royal Dutch Shell had the biggest profit of a European corporation in history (22.5 bilion dolars). 5 of the biggest 10 companies in the world are oil companies (Exxon, Texaco, British Petrolium, Royal Dutch Shell and Total). Other 4 in top 10 are car manufacturers (Daimler-Craisler, Toyota, Ford and General Motors). Guess what all cars need. See where I'm heading? We won't be allowed to break the addictions. No matter what Bush or many others want.

But if we can drastically reduce our oil consumption then we can build up more of a reserve for a rainy day. We probably use less oil in our cars then we do with gas in our cars. One step at a time. Implement an alternative fuel that can replace gas realistically. Then for the east, which uses alot of heating oil during the winter, should find an alternative like natural gas or something. We will never completely kick the habit but if we stop the hemorrhaging then the rest will be easier.

Yeah that's been going around for a few years, now. Don't know how much 'conspiracy' there is in it, but it sure is good business!
