pop up blocker

Hi there,
hope you can help me..
I and my PC have been fighting ..with the pop ups for 2 weeks
my pop up blockers block more than 100 pop ups a day..I am tired of this..

Then I had a look at "C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5" folder..
There I saw all those annyoing web sites that use the pop ups..
I delete them all but few minutes later they are ther again...
another problem is that I can not delet "index.dat" file which is said to be used by another program
any idea/help ??

You may not delete the Index.Dat file, i believe its used by explorer.exe amongst others.
However, some programs somehow manage to delete it, my guess is they do it at system startup before anything is loaded into memory.

You might want to consider running Spyware/AdWare/Malware scanners on your PC.
The FAQ contains links to good ones.

Start in Safe Mode with Networking, then open IE. Go to options, and delete all temp files, and cookies, as well. Then, go to www.trendmicro.com and run their online virus scanner.

Reboot when it's done, and download AdAware by Lavasoft (it's free)

If that doesn't do it for you, there are other steps that you can take. I recommend Avast! AV program, which is free as well.

I have been using "Ad-Aware SE " for a year and it's been doing good job since.
but now it is of no use...

I also have AdWatch, but don't set it to Automatic, so that I get prompted if something wants to open, or modify the registry. Once in a while, I have to disable it to get a site with popups to work, but I haven't seen a popup that I didn't want since I formatted last year.

Use FireFox.. I don't remember what pop-ups are anymore....

I second Gigemboy, the default firefox pop up blocker is sufficeint enough.FYI even IE has it.

I still get popups with firefox though >.>.

Look in Services to see if the Messenger Service is running. If it is, turn it off. It is used on corporate lans, that are behind a firewall. A router will block traffic on the ports used, but it sounds like you don't have one.

If it's on, then can send you messages, which will pop up on your system.

try HijackThis... i used this one when iv encountered pop ups that i could not eliminate with my regular adware scanner...

try searching it over the web cause i only asked for this software from a friend...

Be careful with Hijack This. It can delete the wrong infor too easily. I rarely use it on-site.

What SO are you using? I didn't have Popups since I installed SP2 of WinXP, I think the firewall added in this SP is doing the job.
And another option: Google Bar. Useful and blocks popups. It also show you how many are blocked and you can easily switch between blocking or not inside a given site.

No its not that I get actual pop ups from websites, mostly inapporitate to post on this forum....if you would like I can PM you one of them. .
I know what those are to, it uses the net send, its like net send ip-address message if I recall. Right now I'm very tired and it may not be right.

Well thats because you have your Messenger service running on your computer. Stop it, or better yet, disable it and you shouldn't get those types of alerts. SP2 should have turned off the messenger service by default....

dglienna is right... you should be knowledgeable on what you are deleting when you are using hijackthis... its dangerous but i believe its a very powerful adware eliminator..

If you have the time to google what it finds, it can be useful. if you post the log and someone else has seen the same thing before, it's great. If you're trying to kill something, and on a time limit, it's not worth the problems that it could cause. I'd rather reinstall.
