Re: How many java version today
How many there are? Depends on whether you only means specification versions or vendor versions.
There are five specification versions for the Standard Edition: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 5.0.
Among others, the following vendors produce toolsets and virtual machines: Sun, IBM, Compaq, Blackdown, Kaffe, the Technical University of Vienna, and many many more.

How about Java 2? This "2" is the version of Java or something else.

Re: How many java version today
Java 2 is just 1.2 and upwards. With 1.2, Sun introduced a lot of new features (e.g. Swing became part of the core distribution), and they decided to call it Java 2 - but the actual version name was still 1.2.

No, there really is a 6.0 out or coming out sometime soon. That's what I was talking about.

Re: How many java version today
I'm not sure I look forward to it My Java has already been getting rusty from learning c++, so when I go back to Java I'll have to relearn 5.0, possibly 6.0, a little multithreading and networking.

Re: How many java version today
I can't find any viable resources. I read some saying that the final release would be in the fall, while others say that only the beta will be released in November and in may 2007 the final release will be out.... There's no telling.

Not much new to learn in 6.0 though. It's mostly polishing.
