Re: Do we even like programming?
I work from home, so for starters i set my own hours.. which is terrible for a coder because that means i code all day and all night, when i feel like a break from my coding i come here (and code for other people, go figure) but some nights (normally when something is really urgent) i just can't bring myself to do something when i know i have to.. and i think (wouldnt life be easier if i just dug holes for a living) but then i crack open a can of Jim Beam and once im onto my second, i get straight into it and code and get trashed (infact im drinking jimmy right now!) until i go too far n pass out... sometimes i find rubish code in the morning from the last few minutes before passout (once i wrote C++ code in a VB app haha!) but that doesnt happen very often thankfully.
I don't think any programmer doesn't like programming, because those people do not get far.. they become technitions instead, where they can just skip the whole coding phase n use other peoples stuff whilse still acting all smart n technical to the non-computer type people i mean c'mon that's why we all do it, that's why we all come here, it makes us feel good that we are capable of doing these things, i know i get a special kick when i write a large segment of code that works on the first compile, makes you feel capable, i like it when i get new challenges too, just so i can get that achievement kick out of it.

Re: Do we even like programming?
Aussie's get cans of Jim Beam? That would be sweet...
I've started to do oxygen therapy when I'm coding at home (I haven't convinced myself I'm up to par to work as an independent contractor yet). I used to drink like crazy after work. It was the only thing that kept me sane (I have to support other peoples applications, it's a miracle I never resorted to H).
We all love to code, it's the people who use our code that we hate.

I'll have to do that tonight.

PS - did anyone else get their updated card & cert from MS? Mine arrived yesterday with the correct dates on it (looks like some one forgot to roll it over from the last quarter.)

I figure if I were rich I'd probably program even more often than I do now, because I wouldn't have anyone making me write reports all the time. So I think I like programming, even if I'm not the best at it I find it relaxing.

Mendhak has a link to his page. I assume, that because they give us the link, that we are allowed to post it. The profile only shows the parts that we want to SHOW TO PUBLIC. Other sections can be SHOW TO MVP and SHOW TO MS ONLY. Addresses and phone numbers aren't public for *most* members.
They require a passport to keep out the bots. Wouldn't want the page appearing in Google

You cannot have the link to the page be a click of the MVP LOGO picture - that's the rule...

Another Home Worker.. .. Almost all of my spare Time is spent in front of the puter...( 9 AM to 4 AM) the rest of the time (5 hours) it's Dozing in front of the TV...
Every now and then i get some hardware Job.. And it sits there for 2 or three days before the Wife Ask's.. "Who's Puter is this?" or "Is this to scrap?" Then i remember to fix it..(Normaly its a P1 or PII that is slaved running so much software it starts to over heat).. Yank the cover off Switch it on -- 5 min later still waiting(Hourglass)... Ahh to hell with it ...the Puters Dead ... Flog the guy a PIV...
A Home office is exelent.. If something hits you in the middle of the night (or mostly in my case the morning..) runn over to your puter and code it... My O.S. "Hex editor" was written entirly between 12 and 4 at night.... In those four hours i get more done than the rest of the day...
I love coding, but it's not so cool doing it allone... The forums gives you the chance to talk to others about it..
Gremmy...

Wow. I do that much coding in a day.
Logest straight coding time is about 60 hours straight.. stopping for chow, loo, and a trip to the fridge for a beer or two every now and then..
I code about 7 major projects a year.. with a 3 week turnaround time each.. (the about 2 weeks onsite testing and bebugging) and about 6 months of user debugging
End user "This programs not working."
Me "What is not working on it?"
End user "I start the program and theres nothing but a blank screen" (I Used MDI Forms with child forms for all the different DB Tables)
Me "Have you Opened a database?"
End userCalls to some one else "What database are we using for [The App]?" - Muffled answer of other person
Me "Use Ctrl + O to open the database?"
End user"Okay i got the database open but the screen is still blank."
Me "What is listed in the Menu?"
End user"Where is the menu?"
Me "Across the top."
End user"O okay yes (reads out list)"
Me "Click on Functions, then Browse."
End user"O Okay I see now.. Thank you."
10 min Later
End user"Sorry to bug you, but how do i add a new Invoice.."
Me "Click on Functions, then Add, then Invoice."
End user"Okay Ahh there it is. Thank you."
Another 10 min Later
End user"Sorry to bug you again , but how do i remove a Invoice.."
....
Need i go on....
I'm sure many of you know this exact fustration, of having this conversation.. After the sixth of seventh time my wife filters out these calls and tells thwm i'm out on site.... (Hey.. My PC is right next to hers, but theres no video feed so they dont know i right there listening to her trying to explaing to them word for word what i said not 1/2 hour earlier....)
Gremmy.....

And programming wise, he has no idea what that even envolves.
I had a kid in my room the other day, and you know what he asked? ...we have all heard it... How do you program a game? (or application for that matter)
I mean do people really expect a satisfactory answer to that? I dont know.
And right now im at a level 5 enjoyment tonight. I want to start programming sound using directx, but my sound dosnt work. So how would I know if it works. And I dont feel like coding anything but that now.
Also I dont want to go to sleep, I want to code, but I dont... im so confused...?

Re: Do we even like programming?
yeah you gotta love the "how do i make a program" questoion.
i had a girl ask me, how do i write a game.. i said.. well, you have to be a programmer
she said, just tell me, im good with computers it'd be easy... i just repeated, you have to be a programmer, go learn how to program.
infact, most people i know are completely oblivious to programming, one of the smartest questions i have gotten when i was helping someone (who can do at least newbie lvl programs in vb6), and this was an mp3 player he had made btw.. was from a shoulder looker asking "hey cool are you making a skin for the player?" umm, no, i am coding a new feature into the player.. the reply.. "what?"
yeah.. but hey, im thankful i have at least that 1 person who understands what's going on, when i have to deal with office workers all day (i once had somebody try to type words into a date field, as in "next friday", of course it didnt like that, so i was called up, "the program is faulty! i cant enter the date!" jeez...

Re: Do we even like programming?
infact, most people i know are completely oblivious to programming,
I wish my users were oblivious again... One of the thing our network admin has done is attempted to teach our users terms. It's really really sad and I sometimes get physically sick talking to them.
One guy, the only word he knows is "firewall." He knows it has something to do with security and can prevent some things from happening. That's all he knows about them. Whenever something's not working on his computer, he calls me and says "why can't I log in to my computer, is there something wrong with the firewall?"
We have some remote locations we're connected to by radios. Every now and then, some other companies frequency hopper radio kicks out one of our towers and I gotta call a user at the location to remote into it and restart it.
*Call location*
Me: Hi, this is Derrick from the MIS department and...
End User: *Interrupts me* Hey, my computer isn't working. I can't get on the internet.
(like I had any other reason to voluntarily call these people?)
Me: I realize that, can you get <insert psuedo-trained user's name> for me?
End User: Well, what's going on... I mean, what keeps happening?
Me: <insert BS about how it's too humid and it's interfereing with our radiation transmitters>
End User: When is it going to be fixed? I have lots of <insert redundant job task> to do and.... *continues attempting to validate the reason they have a job*
Me: Just as soon as I can talk to <less then trained user>
End User: He's not in right now, he's out at a meeting. Is there something I can do instead?
Me: Ya, start a pot of coffee. I'll get in my car and be there in 2 hours.
(I'll stop, I can go on with storys like this all morning...)

I think we all got 100's of stories like this.....
End users just arn't worth trying to talk too.. I usualy.. try to go to their office (Callout charge + 1 or 2 hour fee).. Chase them off the computer... Pickup the entries they trying to make... correct the Db.. Tell the user, "If you have any more problems don't hessitate to call, I'll come out as soon as i can to sort it out.", And as i leave i drop off a invoice for the time spent (at a premium rate too) with the accountant...

Weirdly enough, the job I started at almost exactly the same time as this thread started, has robbed my of most of my love for coding. Now it's just a chore that pays the bills - a necessary evil.
So last year I took up electronics as a hobby instead I now love that as much as I ever loved programming.

Odd, I got a job in programming because I loved to write code. Introducing bugs and getting paid for it. Perhaps if you introduced enough bugs in your code, you might feel better about it.

I program for my job in Java, ASP 3.0 and BPEL.
I hate it.
But I program for my own personal projects in C#. I love it. I sometimes dream about code in C#. Probably weird, but not as weird as my dreams ... nevermind.
Need to re-register ASP.NET?

Re: Do we even like programming?
Personally, I think that when someone is not happy (excluding things like personality conflicts etc.) in their profession for months on end they should evaluate if they should stay in said profession or look for another profession. My guess is the majority of software developers rarely get to build a truly awesome application but instead are satisfied when their customer is happy with what they have provided them along with the developer knowing they did a great job and overall was a good experience. I as many members here spend time over and above the average workweek because we enjoy what we do and that is key to being in a profession that makes us happy.
Bottom line is anyone in software development who is in for the long term is more in for the passion and less for the pay check although it is nice getting a pay check.

You can "know" you did a great job all you want, but what if nobody else acknowledges it? You can only get so far on self-satisfaction.

When you create a new thread there is an option for creating a poll. Just step through the procedure. You check the box, Post a Poll? and select how many poll options. You then have to be brave and click submit new thread and it will give you a screen so you can fill in what the question for the poll will be and the different poll options.
Make as many mistakes as you can as quickly as you can. We want to make sure that we make a great enough number of mistakes in a given amount of time so that we can be successful.
