Resolved [RESOLVED] ‘Setup cannot continue…..some system files are out of date’

I’m using the Package and Deployment Wizard (VB6.0) to deploy my application. My users occasionally get the ‘Setup cannot continue…..some system files are out of date’ message. Microsoft support records this in Article ID 174135 which says that the user must select OK and the files will be updated.

Occasionally the Update does not work and the message keeps re-occurring. This is reported in Article ID 191096.

The solution that they recommend requires someone with moderate computer knowledge to make changes to the user system. My users are pilots and as a result they are not very computer literate. And they are spread around southern Africa: Not easy to visit.

Is there no way to pre-empt the problem and react from within the setup program?

Has this not been fixed? In the article, under STATUS, Microsoft simply acknowledges the problem!!!!!

I’ve been there but doesn’t this pre-suppose that I am at the user machine to make the changes. My users are miles away and they don’t expect to have to do anything but load the disc.

Maybe I’m reading it wrong. I am a wee bit geriatric compared to some of you guys and gals.

The package and deployment wizard is known for its quirks. Have you tried using Inno Setup instead?

Never even heard of Inno Setup. Where can I learn more about it?

I had the same problems (when installing VB6 into some WinXP systems). We finally decied on Install Shield to get the installation right.

My company uses Wise, but InstallShield is a very good product as well.

However, both Wise and InstallShield are NOT free. Having said that, for anyone reading this, if you have money in a software budget, I would encourage you to investigate one, or both, of these products.
