You might be better off reading some books about computers. Then if you have questions about the content you're reading, we can help you with that.

The simple answer is Mac's use PowerPC procesors, not X86 (at the moment at least)

It's not about bothering us, it's just that sometimes; the answers we might give may be too vague or complex if you don't understand some of the concepts. I'm not trying to brush you off or run you out. You'll just develop a deeper understanding if you spend time on your own studying some of these things.

OS X and previous versions were designed for the PowerPC architecture. There was a verison of Windows NT that was made for PPC chips that could run along side Mac OS. The verison never got out of beta and has no support.

Right now, Apple is transitioning to the Intel processor, so at the time of this post, only MacBook Pros and iMacs have the Intel processor. This means that x86 OSes can run on Macs but because of the hardware requirements and protection, OS X cannot be run on just any PC (unless you illegally alter it). The problem with getting Windows to run on a MacBook Pro or iMac is that instead of traditional BIOS, the Macs are using EFI (most think EFI will replace BIOS). This means Windows XP most likely won't be able to boot on an Intel Mac, however; Windows Vista will have full EFI support so you will have no problem dual-booting with OS X and Vista on an Intel Mac.

    Hope that answers your question.

    Re: Mac and Win

There is a Mac program that puts a Windows XP emulator over the OS X desktop. Someone had it installed today. It is called "Virtual PC" but I'm not sure how much it costs. There were no network devices in device manager, but it had the correct (Mac) IP address. Kind of weird.

    There are plenty of reasons.

Macs do have a nice looking UI and are generally easy to use, however; they lack the custimization of a Windows PC (not counting any 3rd party software).

OS X doesn't have nearly as many applications as Windows. This is mostly because of its < 10% market share (at the moment).

I had to do a year of support with Macs and I've been working with linux and Windows quite a lot. OS X seems like the slowest and least responsive system (to me) so that may be another reason.

    Re: Mac and Win

Really? Any idea how you'd approach this problem?

Someone I know tried to upgrade her Mac to OS X, and now it fails to boot.
Should I go over and try to re-install OS X, or just reload the old OS that it came with. I assume that the system was compatible, but don't have a lot of troubleshooting experience with the Mac. I'm going to look on Apple's site tomorrow, and go over there the day after.

    Thanks.

What do you mean by "fails to boot"? It oculd be a number of things and it might be easily fixed without a reinstall.

Does it boot to a gray screen then stop? Does it boot to a blue screen then stop? Does it login and then stop? Do you get any kernel panics (either white text on black on the left side of the screen or in a semi-transparent black rectangle with 3 languages stating to hold the power button down)?

    Re: Mac and Win

OK. Just got off the phone. Her boy was using the machine.
The unit is an E-Mac machine that came with OS 9. They upgraded to OSX 10.0.4, which was fine, and then 10.1.2 (as they thought they needed it for a HP printer).

Everything was running fine, until, while using the AOL browser, a site locked up the computer. The boy decided to "pull the plug" to shut it off.

It never started up again. They get the Apple Logo, and the spinning circle thingie that means that it's trying to load something, but it doesn't progress further than that.
Is there a way to get into "Safe Mode" or whatever it's called? He has all the Apple CD's for the machine, including restore disks for OS9, as well as the upgrade disks.

Any clues would be great. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Found safe mode in startup issues.

So, SafeBoot fixes corrupted system files? That might be all that's required.
I've been reading troubleshooting tips, and think that might do it.
Post if you have any suggestions.

The first eMacs came with OS X 10.1.4 and OS 9.2.2 so I have no idea what you mean by the previous upgrades listed.

Anyway, if it boots to a gray screen and it doesn't go any further, you can try Safe Boot but that may not work.

To do safe boot, hold down the shift key when you hear the startup chime and keep holding it until it boots (if it does).

If that doesn't work, try booting form the install CD by holding down the 'c' key when you hear the startup chime. If that works, you can try to run Disk Utility (which should be under the Installer menu). NOTE: you should use the latest verison of OS X for the disk check.

Safe Boot does a disk check and corrects any errors so it could fix some issues.

    Re: Mac and Win

The system boots to the blue screen with the spinning disk.
The emac came with OS9, and they upgraded twice, and things were working fine with the latest OS that I posted.

I suppose that it's possible that it's just in sleep mode, instead of a cold boot, and that may even solve the problem. If that doesn't do it, I'll try SafeBoot and then Disk Utility.

I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

    Re: Mac and Win

I had a problem. Nothing worked. Even tried to repair the disk. Finally formatted, and restored OS X, and then upgraded to 10.2

    All is well again.
