Network Woes
I have two computer on a network. One is running Win98SE and the other WinXP. I know this is a bad idea in the first place but oh well. lol Now I can ping the IP opposite IP addresses and they all go through which means the computer are successfully networked. However I want to allow the WinXP PC to get to the files on the Win98SE PC. I can't figure out how to do that? Any help?

Re: Network Woes
If you're talking about right clicking on Network Neighborhood and then going to mapping drives, then I tried it but I'm not sure what to map it to.
The drive list it offers doesn't contain the local hard disk and I'm not too sure about the path to the hard disk on the XP machine. I'm still new to this so it's rough. lol Sorry I can't be more specific.

Re: Network Woes
You need to do the following:
- Ensure the PC's are properly networked and can communicate. You've done this already.
 - Ensure that both PC's belong to the same windows workgroup.
- Give each PC a name with which you can use to identify it on the network.
- On the windows 98 PC, right click on the drive or the folder you wish to share and select the properties from the menu.
- Select the sharing tab and give the share a name with which to identify it.
You can now open the network neighbourhood and you should see the Windows 98 share in the list.
For file sharing to work in Windows 98, you need to configure your networking options below is an article which explains how to do it.

Also, if you want to share directories on the XP machine, the setup is slightly different:

i'm sure visualAd is much smarter than i am when it comes to this but cant you just map the drive like this
\\computername\driveshare$
the only reason that i can think of is that maybe OS compability

When I do that to the My Documents folder, it asks me for a list of names and access rights for the folder and then it asks me to add a computer. I click the button and it says that there aren't any computers available.

Re: Network Woes
I don't know if this will work but try running the Network Setup Wizard. Run it on the xp machine first and then you can either make a floppy disk with a copy of network setup wizard or you can run it off of your windows xp cd. Dont know if this will work but it is worth a try. Probably not the most technical way to do it but it might work

Re: Network Woes
When you share a directory in Windows 98, you just need to name the share and define its access level. Read-Only; Full or Password.
I suspect you have user level access set up on the PC. You need to change it to share level access. You do this by going to Control Panel ->Network and select the Access Control tab.

That will work when connecting to the XP PC but not on the 98 PC, this is bacause the drive$ shares are special NT administrative shares.

Re: Network Woes
No, they don't exist on Win 9x/Me, you would need to share the entire drive manually.

Re: Network Woes
Thx for the help. I finally got it running. It was the user level access that was blocking me from finishing it. Thx a lot everyone.
