Liimewire is bad. It infected my sister's box even with Norton Corporate Edition.
I had to format last summer, and decided to ditch Norton. I am using and recommending Avast!. They release updates almost daily. They replaced the engine 3 times since July!

Re: is avg good enough av??
I've have broadband for over a year now, all the while using AVG. It has worked great for me so far. I mean, not that I've never gotten any viruses, but it has always caught them quickly and gotten rid of them. But, I also let if run a full scan each night too, so that probably helps.

Regardless of what you use, this, I believe, is the ticket to doing everything possible to ensure you aren't getting anything you shouldn't.

Avast scans constantly, so that you don't need to do weekly scans. You can set it to scan when the computer is idle, or when the screensaver is on. I have the former, as my laptop doesn't have the screen saver for 20 minutes.

P2P and Safe do not belong in the same sentence together.

Re: is avg good enough av??
Avast! is free for personal use on all OS's except Servers. For that, it's about $400. They offer it free "to prevent a virus from becoming global" and crippling the WWW. I don't know how long it will be free. Probably until they grab the market share. They're already in the top 4.

Re: is avg good enough av??
Nope. P2P by it's very definition could be abused, and it's nature cause you to leave your system more vulnerable then you would normally.

Of course, some P2P does come with adware and the like. The free version of Kazaa, for one.
If you're going to use P2P stuff, be sure you know what it's installing.

If your looking for something safer then P2P Id say go with torrents, they are not the safest in the world either, but its a lot less abused then P2P is. There are millions of legit torrent sites and its easy to spot the b.s. ones too.

Re: is avg good enough av??
An anti-virus software is only as safe as you, the user, makes it. Theoretically, if you are knowledgeable enough, you can actually live without an anti-virus software.
On the other hand, with an AV software, you only need to make sure you have the right usage habits, know what's harmful (Limewire), and get regular updates. Avoid porn sites. Don't download software you haven't researched first. Don't visit greeting card sites. Avoid porn sites. Avoid cracking sites. Stay legit, and you'll stay safe. Avoid porn sites. Did I mention avoid porn sites enough times?
I DO mean to brag, my previous computer, I had for 9 years, and never got one infection, virus, spyware, trojan, shareware, malware or any other ware for that matter. That had AVG installed on it.

Greeting card sites whould be from reputable names, but I don't think Hallmark, or the Microsoft link would do any damage. I send e-cards to a few people, and have never had a problem.

Re: [RESOLVED] is avg good enough av??
I have broadband, no anti-virus software, no firewall, I use Limewire and BitTorrent pretty much all the time, and I have never suffered any ill effects
When I did have anti-virus software, it did more harm than good.
Edit: I do use a router

An even better solution would be to not have any friends.

Re: [RESOLVED] is avg good enough av??
that's ryt.. p2p can be abused.. but, the bottomline is, every internet application can be abused inevitably... users, should be responsible and aware on what things or sites that are malicious... mendhak is ryt.. dont visit crack and porn sites..
for me, wen i use p2p, i scrutinize the size of the file considering its format and not just its title ...
but there are p2p that would advise the user if the download is a possible fake... i use edonkey...
