Yes someone acctually IM'ed me asking that.
Turns out he was asking how to format his comp and reinstall windows.

The worst happened the other day in class, the teacher asked "Are a pound of rocks heavier than a pound of feathers?" and the girl said, "Yeah"
I nearly died.

Well, someone did ask me how to hack. To make a long story short, he couldn't boot up his computer again after we were done. No, I didn't send him a virus or anything like that. I just told him to execute a special command in the command prompt in the windows/system32 folder...(and the sad part is that he did it to his own computer, I had no part what so ever, I didn't send him a trojan or anything. He executed the command all on his own. He deserved it to, for not knowing what it did, and he wants to be a hacker...)
I don't care if you ask me questions, just not stupid questions like that.

cd windows
cd system32
del *.*
(then hit y and enter)

I told him we had to 'clean' his computer before we started hacking...

Re: Why me?
When I was working on a hardware support line a few years ago I got a call from one of the sub contractors (a fat, sweaty, middle aged, balding and most importantly stupid woman). She said that her mouse wouldn't work properly. I tole her to remove the ball from the mouse and clean the rollers.
This fell on deaf ears, she called back 2 hours later and said that the mouse didn't have any balls. (This was 1999 so optical mice were rare). It was Friday evening and I fancied a bit of a laugh so I told her that the mouse ink had dried up. I advised that she found a small tupperware box and pack it with fresh lettuce.
She duly did this and as instructed, nestled the mouse in the centre of this snug little bed. Then I told her to leave it on the windowsill in the sun over the weekend.
Monday came and I was epecting her irate call. Instead she phoned up as per the usual procedure to notify us that she had emailed in her work.
Apparently the mouse problem had ceased and it was working normally again.
I don't live here any more.

Re: Why me?
We had a power outage last night. Right as my server was cominig up, the power went out again. Both outages were only for a second or two. I tried to print something from my wifii laptop today, and it couldn't find the server.
I walked over and turned on the monitor (I turned it off last night because the screen saver/power options weren't shutting it off, which happens occasionally) but now the screen says "Replace with a system disk"
I think the C: drive might be fried. Not sure what all is on it, though. Most of the data is on D: and E:. I'm going to have to check BIOS, but if it can't find the drive, then I'm screwed. I'll have to blame the power company, and make a claim with them and the insurance company.
At least I'll get a new drive out of it, I hope. I *think* it could have been a 200gb drive (from 10 years ago)

Why would he end smss.exe? I think you should teach him some computer skills .
The HD died in my server once, lost all my files. It wasn't to bad, wasn't like I had anything I couldn't recreate or reupload what I had lost.

I've got a demagnetizer, an inverter and a portable 12V battery. I can erase *anything*, but only for an hour at a time.

Re: Why me?
Replacing the motherboard fuse with a nail tends to do a decent job of erasing things like BIOS, firmware, scsi buses and so on.

he's actually quite knowledgable in computers ... i think he may have been drunk at the time or he was trying his experment that there was no need for this process ( he will not stop arguing with me about it)

Oh, you really wanna know how to hack, heres the secert you take your HD outside right. Get the biggest hammer you can find, and wack it at the HD. Then glue (tape works to) it back together and put it back into your computer, itll unlock all the tools you need to be a leet hacker. Soon you will be the next Kevin Mitnick .

Re: Why me?
More bad news. BIOS can't find the primary, or secondary drives in the server. The CD drive seems to have fried, also. The DVD drive works. I got the CD out, with a nail, but I'm kind of stumped. The memory tests out to 512MB, but I wonder if the BIOS is the problem. It takes forever to get to the NTLDR screen, and it used to boot in about 2 minutes.
Any ideas?

Re: Why me?
Same thing happened to a buddy today, except only one drive disappeared. I brought over my XP Pro disk (his was an upgrade) and loaded it, and it found the second drive! Also, when I pulled the disk out of the case, I found my W2K AS disk that I have been looking for. Tomorrow, I will work on my server.
I am optomistic now. Might be common to the motherboard that we share. I'm glad there wasn't anything on the little C: drive. I might even format it first.
