I heard something about having to pay a fee to download from Napster in the future, anyone else heard anything about it?

I heard the same thing. What I understand is this: Napster (free) will still exist. The company that bought Napster last year is going to start Napster 2. Napster 2 is going to require a monthly fee (between $5 - $15) and you will get "premium" downloads. What this means exaclty, no one knows. Maybe it will be a club where you need either a DSL, Cable or a Tx connection to join. I really don't care because I don't plan on paying for it. I can see that eventually Bartlesman (owns Napster) will probably remove the original Napster and only keep the pay service going.

if its cheap and you dont need to use a DSL or higer connections i would pay, only if there is alot more people that are willing to or there will be nothing to download!!

Why pay? What has Napster actually got? They have a client which connects users to each other via their servers. So what? People have made clone clients, and there are clone servers as far as I know, what has Napster got? Users, that's all. The only reason people use Napster is because everyone else does. If people were to set up alternative servers with clone clients, there would be no need to have anything to do with them. I can't see how they are going to make it work, unless enough people are taken in by it. Perhaps they will start to provide actual content, in which case it might be worth paying for, but I doubt it.

    Talking napster

well ive heard something like that but, it will only be like $0.15 and only for bands who ask it for roaltise. i dl alot of stuff most of my music is from napster.
if napster dose become evil and asks for money and all the crap thiers always the old way, use a seacrch engine and surch for hours to find one song, or use www.audiofind.com its like napster on the web. but its slower, some links are broken, and u lose alot of great fetures that napster has.

we'er all programers, if napster goes evil then we'll make are own kind of napster.
i think napster uses FTP to send files and every one else uses HTTP that why people say napster is faster.

    Golly......Gee whiz!! Imagine That!
The concept of some artists who put together songs that people like and will download and who will actually get paid some for their efforts! WOW! Isn't there a similar concept in programming called Shareware???
I don't know about you guys, but it kinda makes me feel special when someone uses one of my programs and likes it enough to pay something
Napster isn't the enemy anyway - its the RIAA and their stupid dollar-sign attempt at the regulation of it. If the fee is reasonable and the selection is good then don't gripe about supporting it!

I don't feel reasonable enough to pay for Napster. The bloody Napster client sucks anyway.

I have been a napster pirate (Yeah thats right I said pirate because that is what napster allows you to be) since beta 4
Here is the way I see it:
BMG music, which bought Napster, has control over somewhere between 10-20% of the music rights. So if you think that any of there music will still be avil for download on the free napster, you might want to lay off the drugs.

Sony, Warren and all the other big music houses, which own 50-60% of the remaining music, stopped most of their lawsuites. Again do you think that you will see any of their music on the free service? I doubt it.

That means you will have to pay like $30 a month to get the good stuff because the free napster will only have the music that is not under a big label.

So then GNutella, Freeserver, ShareBear (I know sounds stupid but is the best napster alt so far) etc become easier to use and faster on the downloads. So people like myself that like free better than $$ start using those. With no centeral server or user database it will be had to shut down. Slowly Napster dies because everyone is using these other products.

Sean Fanning sold out so I hope Napster dies.
    Just my 2 cents

This has just been bugging me...

There are 3 words pronounced the same, 'there', 'their' and 'they're'. Note the spellings.

'There' as in, "There will be a brief interlude."
'Their' as in, "I don't know who they are but their ass sure looks good."
'They're' as in, "Do you have any idea where they're going?"

'Their' is possessive. 'They're' is a conjunction (I think). Not sure how you'd classify 'there'.

None of them are spelt 'thier'.

'There' is also used to point places out.

Oh didn't you know? I've been appointed site spelling monitor

Nukem, who else do you see on this thread that is mispelling/misusing the words I was explaining?

Don't your teachers object to you abbreviating everything?

    Exclamation techers

they dont really care about that stuff. all ive been doing all year is notes, and tests. the essays only the info has to be correct, not the grammer or spelling. and when i do have to write well for big reports, i have word and i can correct but it takes for ever. my first copy is always like how i talk here and every where else.

    also. . .
ive been programing so much this year that in my notes thier are little things that are kinda like vb code and c++.
    ex:
    wifes == 1 children = 10

Strange. I think they should care. I mean, you wouldn't find it easy to get a job if you wrote your CV like that, and if you make the same mistakes in your code it will be hell to maintain. Things like that matter.
