Hi all, Haven't logged in for a long long time coz I've forgotten my password.. thank god for John Percival's mail
hardest question in the world.. well, this came up to me a couple of days ago.. and it kept me thinking about it... what is the toughest question of them all. well, let's not say that.. "Where does God come from?" or watever else, I mean in the logical world, what is the hardest question to be brought up? Just for the fun of it.. bring some on.. I've thought of this.. "WHY in the world did Bill Gates came up with the name Windows???!!?"

Yes, and Windows is a perfectly normal name for an OS.
I would have called it "Chair"
If you don't update it(fix it), it crashes, and if you put too much load on it... it crashes....
well... actually, the most appropriate name for it would be "Male Teenage Driver"(if you've driven with a brother or son or something.. you know they crash.... a lot!)

I always found funny that a guy named Gates (Doors?) created a system called Windows.

its cause
you all should know this, but its called windows becuase all the programs are windows. thats what i read in a api thing for i think user32.dll that ur minimizing the window, closing window, maximizing window. EVERY PROGRAM IS A WINDOW.
Funney I used linux when i was 8 threw 10. then stoped. now i want to get into it agien. damn games drew me away from it.
i think that alot of people would like microsoft to give away thier code but all thier going away is the api calls. they'll neaver give away the source. and linux is still better then windows, even if they did give out the source code.
US gov isnt going to do any thing. most people here agree. thier just wasting time and money. alot of the US ecomy is from microsoft. it HQ is here, and people all over the world use it == alot of tax money. infestors would be pissed. it would lower prices of stock so much.

When you open any window, they always have the Desktop window as their parent. Just load up Spy++ and see

is HE really the guy that made up all those stuffs from Windows 3.1 till Windows 2000 and etc. Or did he just started up something simple and hired geniuses to enhance them for him.
p/s:- I still don't get it.. why the name Windows???

Pretty much everything is a window.

Usually there's a simple cure,
1. hit Ctrl+alt+del
2. look for iexplore's
3. end task them
4 wait for some of them that won't close to close
5 in case it didn't and locked up a window instead, hit reset and restart, jump to step 10
6. start resource monitor, if it's not already there
7. look at it, if it's not green, go close some internet explorer windows. (the iexplores in the end task list are invisible ones that just drains you resources and ram)
8. quit msn if it's not enough
9. quit icq if it's not enough
10. it has to be green, otherways restart.
Now when you use ie5.5 you have to be aware that
1. first instance will eat 15M ram
2. you will loose a certain amount about 2M per window you closed after opening a new window.
3 you will loose 5M and some resources if you open a new window which immediately crashed (for some odd reason)
4 you will crash and won't be able to close a window at all if you open a window from icq or msn.
5 a open in new window will crash when you open from another window which has been opened from a window.
6 a open in new window will crash proportionally to amount of resources you have
7 a open in new window will show a error message, and then another, but between them youre being able to browse that page, but not open stuff like normally, you might be able to copy stuff if you just rightclick (ctrl+C doesn't work) (this is my most recent discovery)
8 sometimes open in same window will crash, that is somewhat rare but it happens.
9 closing a window returns about 75% of the amount of ram and 95% of the resources you had before you opended it.
10 never use Ctrl+N to open a window.

Ya know,
I really get tired of hearing people bash MicroSoft and cheer this Linux thing. MicroSoft certainly has their problems, as most companies do. Yes, they are guilty (In MY opinion) of stealing others ideas for some products. But just look around any of the download sites and see how many programs that are available which all do exactly the same thing, most with similar if not identical features ! As for Linux, you bet that it's nice to have an open source/free op system, BUT:
1) If you, as a programmer, are expecting to make even a meager living by writing shareware apps for Linux, FORGET IT! - most end-users of Linux and the like are attracted to it in the first place because of the price. It only follows that they also expect to NEVER pay any money for any program that they wish to use with it. If going ths route, better keep your day job.
2) If you cannot afford to pay about 89 coconuts for an op system from MicroSoft, then you are in the wrong line of work. I would rather see someone who honestly does not have the money but has a burning desire to program get a pirated copy of something they need and pay when they can instead of subscribing to this "Open Source" nonsense and expecting everything for free.
3) Do you REALLY want to release all of your programs as open-source, for all the world to modify as they please, and perhaps lose the original concept of the program? I don't mind writing freeware open-source once in awhile, but the stuff that feeds me needs to be mine
Anyway, didn't mean to vent so much. As for MS killing VB, I don't think it very likely. They seem to be migrating all of their development tools more towards Internet and Intranet development and away from Desktop applications. This may not be a good thing cause if it catches on and desktop apps become a thing of the past, then everyone will need to be connected in order to do anything, and you will use all of your apps online rather than in the privacy of your own computer. Pretty scary.....all that "Private" data floating around.
For now, I say stick close to MS and the other industry giants and make your money off them. Instead of griping about what MS puts out that doesn't work the way you want, try to figure out why. Don't ignore Linux, but use it where it is of most advantage to you and don't rely on it to make a living if you're an independant.
BTW - I know why Linux is called Linux, but why is UNIX called UNIX? Why is freeBSD called freeBSD?
Oh well. Gotta go now.......

freebsd and linux stuff
linux is called linux due to the main/core developer = linus. if dj bobo made the OS it would have been called 'bobo OS' or something to that affect
freebsd is called freebsd cos, its based on the BSD OS. Berkely System Distribution, developer by the university, hence it costing $0 was called FreeBSD. Same with NetBSD. Berkely System Distribution but with Net support and extra internet stuff. follows standard naming conventions

Bill Gates didn't think up the name Windows anyway.
It's actually Microsoft Windows as opposed to X Windows which Microsoft stole the idea from.
