    I am using Win XP. Several of the programs were installed previously without any problems. (The programs themselves are in Program Files; I have to go there to activate them - it is just that I can't get any shortcuts to appear on the desktop)

    Are any icons at all shown on the desktop ? if not, right click the desktop, Arrange Icons By -> Show Desktop Icons.
