    Re: How rich are you??

Seems like a silly attempt - the situation is apples vs oranges - you cannot compare someone in greater-NYC area and their income against someone living in rural Siberia. It just doesn't compare.

If $100,000 USD makes you in the top 0.6% - that is absurb.

A sherpa on Everest sharing the $60,000 fees charges to the "climbing team" makes him a rich, rich man in that country.

What a nonsense to say - it could surprise you greatly if you know a little more than what Discovery channel shows you. I would agree about people living in the middle of say Missouri or Idaho vs New Yorkers...

    Re: How rich are you??

Because what you call "rural Siberia" is one of the richest regions in the world.
It has everything: oil, gas, diamonds, cedr (or cembra pine), serious sience (one of the world's most respectfull university is there) to name the few. It might be considered expreme place to live because of the severe winter conditions however just because of that compensations are very high and among world's highest. A lot of people migrated over there throughout 60s - 80s (and even 90s) to improve their financial statuses. For many improvement was significant but it was a trade off: comfort (in your nice and cozy appartment in western city like St. Petersburg, Moskow or Kiev...) for money.
These are just a highligts so for more detailed info you may need to do your own research (if you want to).

    Regards.

    $0/year

If this is the case you would be one of the billions of people who earn less than $2 a day. Typically you would also not have access to a computer or an Internet connection.

RB - I picked RURAL SIBERIA as a joke - not for real! It was a euphamism (sp?). I could have easily picked rain-forest Brazil or Easter Island...

My point was that comparing income is not appropriate.

You need to compare INCOME-to-poverty level ratios - that's the only way.

If you put in 10,000 USD in that silly website, you are in the top 10% of income earners. But that amount of money in NYC makes you under the poverty level - so the site is twisted - that was my point.

If you live in NYC you are not poor.
It is not a matter of where do you live, but how do you live.
If you earn less than 5000 USD a year, you are poor and you have no chance of living in any mothern city, say NYC, Paris or Buenos Aires. I don't mind being the richest guy in my community, if I have no access to water of quality, food, education... not to mention modern comfort. (Satellite TV, broadband internet..

    Still missing my point...

Look at this website and then you try to tell the 20% below the poverty line in NYC that they are not poor!

It has nothing to do with income - it has to do with income-to-how-expensive-to-live ratios.

If I have a cow and a garden in "east-no-where" then I can be king of my castle.

The website stinks - it's a silly attempt to gather donations through misinformation.

That isn't even close to be the truth. Average income for New Yorker is about $30,000. If you live along that could be somewhat ok, however for an average family that is not so a lot of them rely on wellfare/medicaid as a suplementary income to survive. Would you consider that "not poor" ???

    I agree with your point.

I am currently looking at a job that would pay me 25% more than I am currently making. Unfortunately, I have concluded that my cost of living would increase by about 25% by moving to that area. That makes the job more of a lateral than a step up (though the area is nicer, which is a plus). I also looked at a job in the same area that would mean an initial step down of 10%. However, because of the cost of living increase, this would actually drasticly reduce my standard of living, so I decided not to do it.

Well, yes and no. Your standard of living is much higher if you have those things than if you do not, but if you are working youself to death to get those things, is you quality of life better?

I have a pretty cheap living situation for this country, but I figure my monthly fixed bills (before food, gas, and recreation) to be about $800/month. This largely means that economically, I am like a leaky bucket. As long as the flow into the bucket continues, all is well, but stop the flow, and the bucket will be empty in short order. Am I really better off for that? What really matters:

Health (insurance is a nice thing to have)
Friends (no fixed cost as long as you aren't a total a$$)
    Happiness (you can't buy it)

As for the rest....it is all convenience, but it comes at a cost.
