windows startup problems

I'm running Windows 2000 and the computer is running through bios and it starts to load windows and at the point where windows should be about loaded, a blue screen with some writing flashes for about 500ms and then the computer turns itself off. I have tried to start in safe mode and debugging mode but it does the same thing for either mode. Any ideas about what's going on?

you could try to boot with a win2000 install cd, go in the repair console (does win2k have that? I know xp does) and do chkdsk -r

Press the PAUSE button so that you can write down the error message that you are getting. Usually, you can do it with Shift-Break, but check your keyboard.

Without knowing the error, it is very hard to figure out what the problem could be. It could be a hardware or software issue.

The Windows 2000 install cd is the IT guy's office locked up right now so I don't have access to it.

It's been awhile, don't know if this will work. But, try to boot to DOS (I assuming this computer has a disk drive, and that, that computer isn't the only computer in the office). DOS should work, but I don't think DOS will recongize the hd if you have NTFS. Hmm...theres some versions of dos floating around that could support it (FreeDOS), maybe a bootable linux? (But then again linux may not have the tools you need..)

OH! You could try BartPE, **** but you don't have access to the windows CD. Try knoppix.

(Maybe someone can make the bartpe iso and upload it somewhere for you, I can't because I'm on dial-up).

Maybe you could try and download an ISO of it and burn that to CD? (It wouldn't be illegal, as you allready own the software...). I think you can download it from microsoft if I'm not mistaken...

What stuff do you have access to?
(USB thumb drive? ect...)

What's the last thing that you tried to do? Maybe it is software related?

The last thing I tried to do was initialize a light amplifier by sending code out the com port using the RS232 class for .net and then it hung. I've run the program everyday for the past 5 months with no problems prior to today. I did a hard restart and now I'm having this problem. I'm very confused how I could have caused all this. I have the CD now so I will try some of the aforementioned ideas and see how it goes. Thanks so far for the help.

I was finally able to read the blue screen by getting one word at a time. It sucked. This was the message:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

Is there anyway that my program could have caused this problem or do you guys think this is just a mean boot sector virus? I have tried to run chkReg after the boot disks and run the recovery console. I can't boot in safe mode or in debugging mode or in last known good. Do you guys think that upgrading to XP would fix my problems without losing all of my unbacked up changes that are in the hard drive or should I make that hard drive a slave on another computer and recover my files then reformat?

Using the drive as a slave to recover your files then formatting and reinstalling is probably your safest option IMO. I'd virus scan it before you copy your files off though. You could also do a check disk on it as well.

its not nessarily a boot sector virus it could mean your hardrive is crapping out on you or ur OS is screwed up

try re installing windows or replacing your hardrive
