If god tells you to kill people, you're on a mission and you achieve prophethood.

If the voices in your head tell you to go on a mission to stop a train in its tracks, you get institutionalized.

In either case the victor rewrites history and the madman always becomes a hero.

The comments were attributed to Mr Bush by the Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath in the upcoming TV series Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs.
    'nuff said.

Listening PM (radio4 current affairs show) it sounds like it was used as a fairly off the cuff figure of speech rather than a "I've been sent by god to cleanse the world, bwahahahahahahaaaa" thing. Still seems a bit insensitive to a room full of muslims though.

One thing someone said on the show really struck me though. If George Bush is now arguing that he invaded Afganistan and Iraq because God told him to, how do you argue against a terrorist who crashes a plane into a building because Allah told him to?

That would be puzzling if Bush had actually said the above. But since he didn't, it's moot. IF he had though, what's the big deal - other religons are waging holy wars, but if the U.S. did it - it would be the ultimate evil. It's ok for a billion muslims though.

It's evil from whoever does it. It's more worrying when the US do it because they've got the clout to be far more damaging.

I was para-phrasing though. It wasn't meant as a justification of terrorism. More a highlighting of the fact that Bush's religious beliefs, if they do feed into the decisions he makes on world affairs, diminish his position somewhat in any negotiations he has to hold with heads of state who conform to other religions/athiesm. Those sort of negotiations are particularly important if they help to prevent terrorism and wars in the future and are particularly important now because the two largest religions on the planet do seem to be coming into conflict.
