Hi all

Does anyone here now were I can find some deatiled information on ebook compiler design or can expalin how ebook compilers work.

What I need to know is.
What Fileformat ebook compilers use: eg resource files or custom packed files.

How thay are compiled and what type of compression is used.

What type of internal viewer do the ebooks use. ex IE or a custom made one

if now one can tell or find any of the information above does anyone know of a way to make a ebook compiler. Now I have in the past used resource files and placed them into an exe. then updated the Resource with some api Calls.

Tho this causes a problum with things such as subfolders, and different mine types and also some problums with systems lower than windows 98 becuase the api calls to update resources are not included.

after giving this some careful thought, I would approach this this way (Ive wrote some e books on applied design and application planning)

1. forget all what the other e books are based on, usually, when a company releases an ebook, theyve invested time adn money into this and, in most cases you dont have that.

2. make it accessible to everybody, text browsers, non scripted enabled connections, non exe enabled browsers, non JIT compiled browsers, emulators, and restricted or mirrored access terminals.

3. there is only 1 rule. it is based upon the rules of E.. meaning electronic. Design it your way, but make it work.

4. if the person wants to download it, make it down loadable and provide scope for both viewing it on line, and pressentationoff line.

Genrally most e books are designed suing Flash and basedupon the PDF format, but i ouwldnt do it this way at all. PDF's take time to write create and are hell to actually navigate and circumvate into an applicaiton, and can be nasty to download.

Design hint. HTML/Text files can be opened in any broswer, or the one applicaiton that is accessible to EVERYBODY..... NOTEPAD...

Another Design Hint. Look at an intranet and how it differs from an extranet or internet. the difference. An intranet is based ujpon application requirement that are set down by the intranet owner. Internet/Extranet doesnt have this luxury, so which do you treat your Ebook as???

If you digress your points into the factors and others, youll succedd admirably. I personalyl wouldnt worry about ebook compilers, specifically designed e books applicaitons or modues/templates to do this unless you want it to be marketed to a specific audience that may have this requirement as even then, you cant garuntee the lifespan of these requirement/whether the audience will have them in the first place, and limit thelifespan of your package as a whole and, want to constraint encatchment area of your e book.

there is little else I can give you on this one o if youre designing it from scratch, I m sure youll find this post very informative, or at east gets you to consider designing it yourself. If not, file under B.

hi Thanks. that was some very good information. I like the idea of the Internet way. that does give me an idea. that I can infact build on.
