So is it legal? What do you think the outcome will be?

One of two possible outcomes:
A.) Death by hanging
B.) Death by firing squad

There will be (are) several charges against him and he will be found guilty on most of those charges.
As for the legality of the trial, I think that question is irrelevant, because the wheels are in motion. And the legality will be written in the future by the winners. It's now only a matter of opinion to you and I as to whether this was right or wrong.

Re: The Trial of Saddam Hussain
By the skills of his defense team, which he states needs more time because theyare not experienced or skilled at international law, he will be found guilty and receive Death by firing squad!

I don't think he will get the death penalty (and I hope he doesn't). It would set a dangerous precedent if he did.
In case you're wondering why I said that I hope he doesn't get the death penalty, it is because I firmly belive that no one deserves to die. Rot in jail for eternity perhaps, but not killed.

I would agree, the last thing they want to do is make a martyr of him

But that's not what he is on trial for, nor for the war with Iran, and why not? Well because that would implicate America and Europe who were oh so helpful during that period.
At the end of the day he will be found guilty, but it depends on how long the trial takes. If it goes on for more that three years they will not be able to execute him (Iraq law has an upper age limit).
His defence seems to be that he was putting down an insurrection, just like America did in their attack on Fallujah. So he is going for the "If I'm guilty so are you".

They're also going for the Human Rights ploy, that it would be against his human rights to be executed

Re: The Trial of Saddam Hussain
We need to draw a line under the human suffering that is going on in Iraq. The terrorists (et al) are not going to create a precedent, so we should.
He should be inprisoned for life.
But it's not our decision. The death penalty, and it's application, should be down to the individual state.
We should have no power to imply, infer, or otherwise force a decision either way.
Self-determination was the key to the illegal invasion, wasn't it?

Re: The Trial of Saddam Hussain
My understanding is that regardless of the outcome of this trial he will not be killed. He has been charged with several different things in several different areas. Since Iraqi law does not allow somebody to be tried in absentia, they need to keep him alive for all of the separate trials.

So in essence - his penalty will be to sit through court trials the rest of his life?
Ouch! Now that's inhumane.
