anyone know how to input non us-ascii characters into an xterm or Terminal window?

What do you want to send? I don't think there are US-ASCII characters.

i was wanting to input the character 'ä' into the terminal, but it doesnt show up.

Isn't there a key-mapping utility? There is in most terminal emulators. The program probably uses one file for each type of connection.

If you are using a terminal emulation program, you should have some way to set up the keys.

i dont think i am using a terminal emulator.
just the default OSX terminal and X11 xterm.
