subdomain ftp problem?

i got a subdomain from my freind with a ftp fr this subdomain, this is what is happening

i upload my folder called 'pics' to the ftp (through smartFTP) and then i try and view it , for e.g..

www.myname.sitename.com/pics/pic1.jpg

but it gives me

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /picx/1.jpg on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

It sounds to me like a problem on your friends end. Has he set you up properly to get to where you need to go?

yes its done properly, when i put the index.html up i can view it properly but im just having problems with not being able to view images etc
