My virus scanner has the most current definitions, and my firewall does too(it scans certain ports that would be open if a program like sub7 or back orifice was installed).

I don't like the fact that my machine has been broken into and screwed up before, and I'm not taking anymore chances.

oh and you think a firewall will keep you defended from hackers? it will all the lamers but the good people (no names ) will be in easliy, and as you have aDSL, wiv fixed ip addy (i assume) id watch ur ass cuz if they are lurking on this forum they have a target... best protection is to have no internet connection at all

I've got DSL... my ISP is concerned about security, so it's not always on and my IP changes everytime I logon....

and I know a firewall won't protect me from the real good hackers, but theres such a small chance that people like that would even want to get in my machine that I'm not too worried.

oh they will go for the smallest person, hacker dont think like the ways we do (me addmiting being a former hacker, i wud do it for fun not for money fraud etc.) we would go for anyone for a laugh, i say another good way is to run your DSL of a old comp on a LAN and connect to the internet thru that, then they have less chance of getting to your main pc, then you can olny allow certain protocals to be allowed over the LAN...

Me, knowing two hackers, would know that most do not break into PC's for fun. But that really depends on what your definition of hacker is.

BTW, I didn't provide enough of an explanation,
what I meant is, they don't really break into PCs at all, they know how to hack, but they only use it to help people, they would never break into someones PC for fun or malacious reasons.
