Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
Hello,
This is a real dumb question and is certainly not one of my expertise, but how can I achieve 1600x1200 resolution? You obviously need the graphics card to do it, and the monitor, right? I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (All In Wonder) and I know it goes up to 1600x1200. I'm not too sure about my monitor. But, here's what happens when I set my resolution at 1600x1200. Basically it stays at 1024x768, but I can like scroll around and it'll pan around the screen. For example, if I am near the taskbar, I can pan up to the title bar of a program. But when I'm at the title bar of a program, I can't see the taskbar. Is this a given clue that my monitor doesn't support 1600x1200? If so, if I want to buy a monitor, what would I look for? I'm not saying I'm looking to buy one, but I havn't really seen a monitor that advertises "Max Resolution: 1600x1200" but that's probably just my dumbness.
When I'm at 1600x1200 and do a screenshot (the full screen) it does the whole screen (1600x1200), but like I said, when I navigate it's like it's doing 1024x768.
Here is a better description of what happens when I use 1600x1200, but when something is wrong and it doesn't work properly.
In the first one, you see Firefox with the title bar. No taskbar or anything, you have to scroll down to see that.

Here, you see the taskbar, but no title bar of Firefox or system tray. You have to scroll to the right to see the system tray.

And here is the system tray, with the Start menu and Firefox's titlebar not showing.

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
Sounds like your video card supports 1600X1200 but you monitor does not. I am pretty sure that you would have to purchase at least a 21" monitor to support that resolution and they are not cheap.
Here is an example of a monitor that will support it:
Samsung 213T
"Imagination is more important than knowledge..."
Albert Einstein

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
On http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UXGA, it basically says UXGA monitors allow 1600x1200 resolution. If a monitor's display type is UXGA, but has a recommended resolution of, say, 1280x1024, does this mean that changing to 1600x1200 on that monitor won't display properly since 1280x1024 is a different ratio than 1600x1200?
Thanks for your help

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
Every CRT I have seen, bar a very old Macintosh monitor, uses the 4:3 display ratio. Also, nicer 19" monitors will support 1600x1200 and more, but these modes are not especially useful unless you aren't going to use your eyes in other parts of your life... They recommend 1280x1024 because they didn't think of recommending 1280x960. There are a ton of resolutions you can use, and I believe some specially modified drivers will allow increments of 16/12 pixels. I use the 1360x1024 mode allowed with the ATi Catalyst drivers. While not 4:3, the error is less than 0.4% (if you want to be mathematical), so I don't think it's worth worrying about.
Over here I use a Radeon 9500 Pro and a Philips 109B monitor, a 19" CRT capable of 1920x1440.
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.
(Just a heads-up)

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
It may not be that your monitor doesn't support the display mode, it may be that the monitor driver doesn't support it. I have a 19" NEC monitor which supports up to 2048x1536 with a reccommended 1600x1200, but the driver that Windows automatically installed only supported up to 1280x1024. I searched on the NEC site for the driver but couldn't find one, so just modified another one to allow the resolutions and refresh rates that it supported.
I can now display 2048x1536 on my AIW 9800 Pro with 19" monitor. Although without using a magnifying glass to read text on the screen it's pretty much useless, so I stick to the standard 1280x1024 and view it from a comfortable distance. But I can still impress people with the capabilities of the monitor if I want to
Note:
It is not advisable to modify the monitor capabilities in your driver file unless you know exactly what your monitor can do. I have blown the tube on a monitor before by trying to push it too far, so you have been warned.

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
20" flat screens generally do 1600x1200, but text is generally unreadable at that resolution. I have a wide format 24" flat screen that does 1920 x 1200. It looks great, but I can't read it. Basically, you can get to that resolution with the right monitor and driver, but you won't be able to use it once you get there.
My usual boring signature: Nothing

Well yeah that's what I mainly want... during games. But like I said, I'm not going to buy a monitor soon, I was just thinking ahead and seeing why I can't go to 1600x1200 right now.
NoteMe, what monitor make/model is that?

Hmmm...good question. The cheapest one I could find 4 years ago... ...I can't remember. I am at work now. But will tell you tomorrow, if I just remember to read it off the front of it.

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
Alright, thanks. The reason I ask is to I can see the specs, and look for a monitor (whenever I start looking to buy one) that has similar specs, so I know it can reach 1600x1200 for games. You can read the text fine for games though, right? I mean I know games it's not leading reading an article online...
But, hey, if that monitor is still being manufactured, it'll probably be even cheaper!

Re: Achieving 1600x1200 resolution
It is called:
Hansol 920p
Modell: b19cl
It is not a particulary good monitor. But it was cheap, and I was a student. And it works.. The text in games becomes really smal in 1600, but I usualy don't play any games where the text has anything to say anyway. Like CCS and Vietcong and so on....
