Re: DVD to Xvid or Divx ?
I tried these :
1-Plato DVD Ripper 1.06
2-Dvd-to-avi
both take hell of a long time (about 20 hours) even wth my intell 3.4 machine . Plus , the quality isn't that good .

Re: DVD to Xvid or Divx ?
Pirate,
I won't be much help, but I have tried a ton of different programs to convert DVD to various formats, usually I only want a small clip from a movie rather than an entire DVD. What I have found is two things:
The process takes an eternity
The quality sucks
I will tell you that I still think the best program for decryption of DVD's is the freeware program, DVDShrink if you have not tried it, much better than any of the others

Re: DVD to Xvid or Divx ?
I use Magic DVD Ripper. It's not free but it seems to work pretty good. I can usually rip one dvd in about 3 to 5 hours depending on the length of the DVD.
It will rip to DivX unfortunately it rips in like 320 x 240 resolution. So if you increase the size in order to watch it (cause thats pretty small to watch) you do get some fuzziness but it's still no worse quality than if you watch a movie on your cable box. I dont really notice any quality loss in the sound though.
It has options to play with the resolution settings of the DivX rip, but I havn't played with them enough everytime I change them I get an error when I start ripping so for now I've been leaving them be and the quality has been good enough for me personally.
I know there must be better rippers out there though, because I've downloaded DivX rips that are at higher resolutions thus better quality when enlarged to fullscreen. Just gotta figure out which ones they are I guess.

Re: DVD to Xvid or Divx ?
Right now , I'm using DVD To Divx VCD Ripper .It seems to have all the options for Divx and Xvid .The only problem is it's splitting the movie into piece (75mb) each .It's fast ....still have to test it more...

Re: DVD to Xvid or Divx ?
I've used Gordian Knot, which is basically a large package of software with a handy frontend. The process is:
- DVDDecrypter to disk
- DVD2AVI to process it
- the GordianKnot program creates an AVS file out of this
- Load into VirtualDub
- Save as what you want.
