Suggestion for a change in the rep system

    Hi gang.

I would like to make a suggestion for a change in the reputation system. I'm tired of getting the "You have to spread your reputation around before you can rate mr X again" message every time I want to give someone a few rep points for some excellent advice or code snippet. I mainly hang around in the Classic VB part of this forum and most questions there are answered by a few numbers of very active members so it's not very surprising that I often want to rate the same persons.

I fully understand that the way the system is implemented now, that you have to rate (I think it is) 20 people before rating the same person again is to avoid people from cheating. But couldn't this be combinated with a time limit. Say if I've given some rep points to mr. X, I can't give him more until I've rated 20 others or it's been 2 weeks since I rated him last (or 3 weeks or a month, I don't know). When I want to rate someone he/she of course really deserves it and I don't want to browse around looking for other replies I can rate just so I can give the well deserved reputation points to whomever that may be.

    What do you think?

I think that this is a very good idea.

I think it is a good idea too but

    - I don't think the forum software allows for it, and

    - it has been discussed before with no resolution.

Also, the spread is 10 members betweeen reps.

I've not seen it on any other vBulletin board. Only different values for the settings we have.

Any modifications to the underlying forum software require a hack, which the admins are loath to install as it means more work come upgrade time when we start from a clean slate.

The spread on Codeguru I think is different from here so it's probably not too hard to change...

It has all ready been changed twice. And it is not going to be changed again.

Joacim Andersson: Consider your self lucky. The classic section has at least a lot of posters. You should see the smaller sections where there isn't even 10 persons answering posts at all. Maybe not 10persons posting at all either.

I'm not asking for a change in the spread I'm asking for an alternative way of counting when I can rate a member again.

I also think it's a good idea and I'll pass it up the line but that is far from an assurance that it will happen.

About the spread. Yes it's easy to change, yes we've changed it before but it's unlikely that it will be changed again.

Re: Suggestion for a change in the rep system

As stated - adding a time criteria would require changing the PHP/perl code, which we avoid at almost all costs in order to avoid issues when we upgrade.

This is something we can suggest to vBulletin. If they add the change to the primary software, then we will get it in an upgrade.
