I have a good example where I want to post the same question in the ASP/VBScript forum but also in the COM/ActiveX forum.

It would be a good feature if you could post to multiple forums (fora?) but only one thread existed.

i.e. when someone replies in the ASP/VBScript forum it is visible in the COM/ActiveX forum because it is effectively the same thread.

So you only have one thread, but it is visible in more than one forum.

Make sense?

I have the ability to copy a thread to another forum and when I do that you get notifications from both forums. I rarely do it however because I don't want to start a flood of such things. For now you should choose whichever forum is the better fit and post there.

Yeah, that would be nice. But it would be open to abuse by users who usualy double post and bump their threads after 5 minutes.

Let's say you were able to checkmark to which forums you want to post, there will be a lot of people that will check everything regardless of the fact that the thread should not be in a particular forum.

For now you should choose whichever forum is the better fit and post there.

This is the best advice, although I know that it might be difficult to determine which forum section is the best fit.

I see threads every day in the Database section on using VB to connect to a database, and I see those same type threads, posted by different members, in the VB section.

So, what is it: A database question or a VB question?

When your question covers more than one area, it can be a little perplexing deciding on which section to post it in. Most questions, however, are not split down the line 50/50 - in the above example, I would say it is more a VB question because you will be using VB code to do your connection.

In your case, what would be the more pressing? Creating the ActiveX/Com object, or, once created, using it with ASP/VBScript?

Without knowning any of your specifics, I'd say the first step would be creating the object and so any questions concerning that would go in COM/ActiveX. Once that was done, if you had questions on how to use it, then I'd say a followup question in a different thread in ASP/VBScript would be appropriate.

I just post in a completely inappropriate forum and let the mods decide which forum is the best for it, and they move it. Takes out all the guess work.

We can also move a thread and leave a redirect in the previous forum. This is pprobably better because all the replies are in one thread and not spread amongst mulitple copies.

I would say this is the best answer. If I have a PDA question that can be considered general VB.NET in any way, I put the question there just because I'll get more eyeballs.

Hmmmm, I suggested this very thing in the Mobile Dev forum just....today.

Well if I can't decide between APIs and Classic VB (i.e. it has a good part of both) then I'll post it in Classic. But if it was a toss-up between APIs and C/C++ I'd probably post it in API. On the other hand if it was C++ with a bit of APIs then I'd post it in C/C++.

Then perhaps after a couple of days or other resonable amount of time, if you get no responses, you may post another thread in the second choice forum with a link pointing back to your first thread. This will keep all answers in one thread and everybody will be on the same page. Keep it limited to one shortcut thread only.

You can always advertise it in Chit Chat, you get all sorts there, and it won't offend anyone.

From a search perspective, it is not a good idea to double post in forums. If your question hasn't been answered after a couple of days, it is generally acceptable to reply to it to bump it back to the top of the thread listing for that forum.

And, posting a link to the thread in Chit Chat will just make it even more cluttered. We want to actively encourage our members to browse for forums, not just Chit Chat

Maybe I'm just being hard-nosed lately but bumping isn't a good idea. Can you imagine what would happen if everyone fought for the top of the page by bumping their threads? In any case a thread in most forums would stay on the first page for at least a couple of days. That's sometimes true even for Classic VB.

Generally, (in Classic VB anyway) if your question doesn't get answered in the first few days, bumping isn't gonna help. Even if no-one else does, I'll see it, because I have my forum view set to 100 threads per page for Classic VB

Yes, that would be a problem but its always been done at a reasonable interval or else someone will post telling them not to BUMP their thread every 15 minutes. I think a BUMP after a day would be ok.
