CRT/TFT Monitor Damage

I am trying to find out (without destroying my lovely monitor) how fragile they are. I have had CRT monitors for ages, and now have a 17" tft, are tft's prone to damage, for example image burning into the screen if left on for a long time?

Yes, TFT screens are at least as fragile for this as CRTs. So on you go with your screen saver.

If you first get someting burned then Philips told us on a course that you should leave the monitor on at least for 8-12 hours a day for a period with constantly moving picture.

And other thing. Yeah, they don't like to be touched. Pixels die fast on a TFT, and there is no guarantee before at least 3 (hmm I think it was 3) pixels have died inside the warenty time. But touching the screen so the pixels die is not a guarentee thingy anyway though.

Always burn it in for 72 hours straight. Doesn't matter what you have on it, just keep it running. If it doesn't die, then odds are that it will last a long time. Just don't leave the same image on it

Also, if for example i displayed a black form (VB6) would this have the same effect as turning it off, if you see what i mean.

I know it would still use energy, but would it stop the screen from screwing up? or is this the same as leaving an image to burn?

It will still wear out your screen, but you will not be able to see it in the same way since there is no contures. It will be the same as changing the colour on your monitor after a while. You have probably seen that old old computer screens have darker colours then new once...that is why.

Im doing this cosi bought a tft a month ago, but wont it to last a while, i wrote a small app in VB6 to flash random colours on the screen, in full screen mode, will this do the same as playing a film or moving image on it? (to wear it in)

Also, read the companies policy regarding dead pixels. Every company has different policies regarding the matter, some will only allow it if a certain number are dead, some only allow it if a certain number clumped together are dead, etc.

If you just wanted to use a black thing, use the Blank screensaver provided by Windows, it does just that.

I've always been led to believe that a screen saver is fairly useless for an LCD. The "burning" of an image on a CRT is due to the phosphor dots on the screen being lit for extended periods of time. They become very hot and burn onto the screen producing the ghost image. With an LCD, it is a big matrix of pixels which are either on or off. There is basically no heat being produced, it's not a violent affair like a CRT which is basically an electron gun.

All the same, I always turn off my LCD when I'm not using it, if only to save power.

The monitors on all of my computers (CRT or TFT) turn off after a period of inactivity that I specify. That works better than screen savers, in general.

wrack's software works good to test for dead pixels. I'd recommend using it when burning in the monitor. it can't hurt

I know about burining CD's.... but burning LCD ???

PS, I agree with Penagate, I don't think that leaving the same image on an LCD will damage it in any way... an LCD is made of tiny LED's, you can turn them on for a long time without damaging it...

I worked at Dixon for 4 years..we ruined lots of LCDs and plasma TVs.

Why do you think the expensive models comes with an antiburn tool buildt into the TV...
