IE doesn't support the alpha channel in PNGs. As such, it doesn't support transparent backgrounds of PNG images. Supposedly there's a javascript hack out there that will allow it, but I don't know how well it works.
Good news (if you can call it that) IE7 (with WinVista) is supposed to have transaparency support for PNGs.

All of my "clients" use IE. D**n it!

It does, and it won't be limited to Vista - the beta works on XP
