Resolved [RESOLVED] VB and MS Office MSI

    Hi gang,

I recently uninstalled a lot of crap from my computer but one of the uninstallers must have messed something up because now when I use the VB IDE the MSI installer for MS Office 2000 pops up all the time. This happens whenever I add or remove one of the regular controls (like a command button or a text box) or if I change the properties of one of these controls.

This is of course very annoying and since I don't have the setup disk for Office I can't fix it. I'm guessing there might be a registry entry or something. Are there any MSI pros around here that can help me disable the office setup from being started as soon as VB access the MSVBVM60.DLL file?

I'm just walking out the door to get my car detailed, but there is some posts on the forums about the infamous dialogs poping up similar to this. What version of Office are you running?

I actually don't know if it's the Premium version or not. It's been a while since I installed it (which you might understand since I'm still using Office 2000). How would I check that?

Re: VB and MS Office MSI

There are several verisons of Office 2000:

    • Office 2000 Standard
    • Office 2000 Professional
    • Office 2000 Premium
    • Office 2000 Small Business
    • Office 2000 Developer

For the Premium version you will have these apps available to you if you did a complete install...

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/as...379651033.aspx

To determine you version check in the Controls Panel > Add/Remove Programs > and in the list of installed apps you will see "Office 2000 Premium" is you had installed that version.

OK, in that case I have MS Office 2000 SR-1 Premium (but not with a full install).

Re: VB and MS Office MSI

Ok, have you tried an "Office Update" ? Although it may still request your CD to copy files from but you could also try a Detect and Repair inside each of your Office apps., under the help menu.

More then likely one of the apps you uninstalled removed a shared office file.

I tried the "Detect and Repair" from inside Word but after the setup program has runned for a couple of minutes to gather information it just pops up a dialog requesting the setup disk.

That may work for the VB sorce of the popup but the Office apps should still be invoking the popup until its files are re-installed.

Well, I own my copy of VB. So it's a legal copy, I just don't have the disks anymore. I lost most of my disks when I moved house a year ago.

Maybe you could talk to Microsoft? If it was registered, they may be able to help. No backups? Did you file an insurance claim? Last idea is that you re-install what you deleted, if you have the disks.
It might restore what is needed.

Re: VB and MS Office MSI

The problem with reinstalling the things I uninstalled is that I uninstalled a bunch of things I don't use like shareware programs I once downloaded for testing purposes and such, and I don't even remember what all the stuff was that I uninstalled.

Is there no way of just telling MS Office (or MSI) not to automatically start the installer? If not I guess I probably can borrow the Office disks from someone which I probably need to do anyway. But for right now it would be perfect if I could just disable the MSI installer somehow, since I'm working on some maintainance code for a customer tonight, and the code is in VB6 and I'm starting to get tired of clicking the Cancel button on the installer all the time (which I also need to do twice before it gives up).

Re: VB and MS Office MSI

It's a common issue with Office 2000 (especially in a network environment).

    See if this helps.

Failing that maybe this will help

Or, maybe you could try removing the "Microsoft Office Startup" link from your Start Menu->Programs->Startup folder and see if that cures it.

Thanks for the suggestion ILMV but that is not an option for me I'll rather buy a new used copy somewhere.

Thank you so much for the links penagate. According to the Event Viewer (which I checked after banging my head in the wall for a couple of minutes wondering why I didn't do that in the first place), I lack the IMPACT.TTF font why that would effect VB is beyond me. Would it be possible for someone to upload or send me that font?

Thank you again penagate, that fixed the problem. I would rate you twice if I could but since I can't I wont rate you at all . Just kidding you have my rep points. I also want to thank you other guys that have tried to help, especially Gangsta Yoda (also known as "That guy with all the green dots" or RobDog888, sorry I'm not allowed to rate you just now).

EDIT: I'll take that back, I was able to rate that barking green little fellow known as Rob.

That's kind of you but that is not really how this should work. If you personally feel an answer here deserves a rating then you should rate that post but don't do it on the behalf of someone else .

Well think of it this way, when im programming into the late hour of the morning, and you attempt to answer a question of mine, i would not want you to be annoyed by crappy MS messages and whatnot, thus possibly making the accuracy of help lower then usual. So Penagate fixing your problem will, i hope indirectly help myself, and billions of other VBForumer's
