    Google Talk

Was released today. Anyone try it out yet? I have it installed but don't have anyone one my buddy list yet.

    Re: Google Talk

i tried it with my friend (at work so i couldnt test the "voice" feature, but it seemed to work when we tried it, unlike AIM which always has firewall problems)

its pretty sweet, but compared to AIM or MSN, it is very basic... one thing i like is it saves your previous conversations.. so when your buddy IMs you again, you can see the convo you had with them last time as well...

another cool feature is if you type a message and send it, then type another and send it before your buddy has responded back, it groups it all in the same message instead of adding a new entry with your name and the message... (small stuff, but pretty neat just the same)

I had heard AOL is planning a beefed up new version of AIM with tabs, and they claim the firewall issues will be resolved...

You know you can do that with MSN too.

    no i didn't, but I don't use MSN, I use AIM only...

while there is plently I don't like about AIM (and especially AOL in general), I still find AIM better for use than MSN, and most people I know are on AIM and not on MSN.

My best guess of why they made it "very basic" is this. When most software companies release software, they bloat it up with every single feature they can think of, even if the features don't work properly. My guess is that Google is going from the bottom up. They will probably start with a simple piece of software that simply works, then add features that are strongly implemented so they work to the maximum.

With Trillian, you can talk to both MSN and AIM at the same time, but you can't join the two into one conversation, which you can do with MSN and Yahoo.

Well, I don't use the encrypted (paid) version of Trillian, which is a yearly fee, so it's free also. I may look into GAIM some day. Does it let you talk to *EVERYBODY* ???

pretty basic, i would have likes to see a universal google talk, for example one that can talk to MSN, AIM, and the others.
