I read somewhere that programming languages such as C and Ada are used to convert analog signals from transducers which sense pressure, tempture, speed ect....in industrail piping, lifts, turbines and storage tanks to digial signals for interpretation by software. Is this true? And what is Ada? Ive never heard of it

(Warning: I'm not positive about any of this info, it's just how I remember it.)

Ada was a programming language developed by the US government in the 1970s. It was a very weak language which slowly became the subject of much ridicule and slowly passed into oblivion. It was named after the French female aristocrat Ada, the first "programmer", who help Charles Babbage in design of the Difference Engine and Analytical Machine.

But I may be 100% wrong =). Let me know. And I'm interested in the analog -> digital conversions too.

    Bert,
You were right about the histiry of Ada. However, it is not in oblivion as is still widely used by the military. The Air Force considers it their primary coding language and trains all entry level programmers how to use it. Scary isn't it?

There was a later version of Ada called Ada95

I'm not sure whether there are later versions yet.

Interestingly however, during the air stikes on Kosavo a news report on Britsh TV mentioned that Cruise missiles run on Windows 95! Is this correct? Or was someone getting Windows 95 confused with Ada 95.

They do not run on Windows 95. Most of the S/W is developed in a Microsoft world but the CMs have a much smaller OS to facilitate mathmatical speed. You don't want your OS to give you a blue screen in the middle of targeting if you know what I mean.

well first thing i am sure of is that , even using vb u can make an scope and measure analog signals , but i dont think that even ada is able to directly convert analog to digital without any interface connected to the pc (ie : between source and pc com port ) and if the device is present (analog to digital converter) u can do what ever u are talking about using either vb or vc++ or eveb QBasic
or TurboC++ (in TurboC++) include the file dos.h and use the commands outp and inp to write/read from and to the port

And yes ada is used by the US ARMY For military Purposes ,
    (obviously)
