need some advice on running program background

hey , i am doing a project with vb.nt and the program need to run on the background of the computer to wait for the server to send something to the client. i need to know what code or method should i see in at the msdn, and what code or method can make the program to let the comupter be in the stand by mode ?

ummm..Im not sure about standy mode..dont know if the process keeps going on in standby mode too...standby for someone else to help
