    Dumb and Dumber

I just saw on the news that a delivery person forgot to put her pickup into park while making a delivey. It was in reverse, I guess. Within a minute, the truck was driving around in circles. The police were called to block off the street.
It was doing donuts, driving up on the curb on both sides of the street.

What's worse, is they just watched it take out a few mailboxes, and hit a few cars, before they decided to stop it, BY USING SPIKE STRIPS, taking out all four tires!

Surprised they didn't drive a squad car into its path.

i dunno about you guys, but where i live if you leave your car in gear and lift the clutch up without any revs you will stall, and therefore this event would have never happened. lol.

    Re: Dumb and Dumber

My Blazer slipped out of park once a few years ago. I was switching parking places with my other car. It ended up backing right into the neighbors pickup truck. The spare tire on the back put a dent in the truck, but didn't hurt my truck. I paid for the damage, and got the linkage fixed.

    Re: Dumb and Dumber

    Because:

    1. The auto-stick is ulgy
    2. I like to be in control, as to what gear I am in
    3. They are hell when you have to start on ice or snow
    4. I dont trust them
    5. I like the clutch very very much
    6. I like to hold my left hand on the wheel and the right on the stick shift

That's just off the top of my head.

hehehe, and the fact that they aren't automatic, like I say!

Surely automatic should mean, it drives for you!

You're wrong there. They are called automatic transmissions, not automatic cars. So they do what they say

By Drive themselves, I mean pick gears COMPLETELY by themselves, Power Rating 1,2,3 by themselves, reverse by themselves, neutral and park by themselves etc.

When they make that, the car will be able to drive by itself.

    Re: Dumb and Dumber

    rant ON

I drove a stick before I even got my license. In Drivers Ed in High School, I folded down the clutch pedal, and was shifting gears to the movie. I've driven bikes for 20 years, and they all had clutches. I've driven dozens of cars with a stick shift.

The only time you don't have to shift gears is when you are at a constant speed, and in the city, this is impossible.

It's been said that a stick shift is quicker than an automatic, which I've found to be totally false.

If you put it in Drive, you can go anywhere, and traffice doesn't matter.

You can learn to shift a manual transmission without using the clutch, but you still need to use it occasionally.

An automatic will get you the best gas mileage at all times.

    ------------------------------

You can start out in L2 in snow, just like 2nd gear in a stick. Plus, with all the front wheel drive cars out there, starting in snow doesn't really affect them,

It's better to have 2 hands on the wheel, and not have to worry about a third pedal that you have to use with your foot.

You can downshift at any time. Plus, pressure on the gas will trigger the kickdown cable to select a lower gear.

    ---------------------------------

I quit riding bikes after a wreck. Maybe in the country, but if I never ride again, it won't be a loss.

If I drive a stick, I consider it more work.

Automatics lock into gear, but I've learned not to depend on the fact.

    ------------------------------

I started a '72 Maverick with stick shift, just as my Mom was getting into the car. Before they had clutch interlocks, the car moved backwards before I released the key, and it knocked her on her A$$. I was 11 years old!
I had always started the car before my parents got into the car, and we had traded cars with my aunt that weekend. Oops.

    /rant off

    Re: Dumb and Dumber

First of all, dglienna, you should have used [rant] [/rant] markers.

Secondly, you are right about the FWD cars, but I preffer RWD, and it can get messy with them on snow, even with a manual transmission.
I dont consider the stickshift work. Clutch too. It just kinda flows with the driving, I dont think about it.
I know about the kickdown, but still, I preffer to have control over what gear I am in. In that regard, a sequential transmission (semi automatic) is acceptable.

You are right that the automatic is faster while chaning gears (much faster), but still...

Uhh, how do you get out of an automatic car when its in reverse and running? As soon as you take your foot off the brake it starts moving backwards - you'd get hit by the car door.

Automatic race bikes are a bit thin on the ground these days (apart from minimotos of course, but they are for idiots and shortarses anyway).

She cut the wheels to the left(or right, i don't know) up to the curb. Then went to deliver her product. 2 minutes later, the truck had jumped the curb, and wouldn't stop.

Pretty dumb, but just got dumber.

I had a Honda 650 that had a 1100 gesr on the back, and a shortened chain.
20mph redlined first gear. It was fast. I am light, so I could smoke the tire in second gear if I power shifted.

    Re: Dumb and Dumber

I HAD a Yamaha XT 660R. The poor thing, I only had it for two months before the crash. The engine wasn't even broken in yet. But fortunately, the insurance will pay for the damages, and my injuries. So come next spring, I'm riding again. This time a Yamaha MT 01.

And I wanted to buy a mini moto for fun, so, it's not only idiots and shortasses.
