Re: Project Internet Browser
Well, yes sure there are very good internet browsers around like.......well.......Firefox, any more..............maybe Opera..........anymore..............no!!!
THere are 2-3 good internet browsers around and if we can get a big enough team we could probably make one of the best one's yet! Make it open source, get people to help us who aren't in the team (Everyone's welcome) etc.
Internet Explorer is just another one of M$' muck ups, like VB.NET!

VB Browsers are too slow. No browser is written in VB.

Maybe we could make it well..... good
Surely we can have a small project going?
Just for a little open source (I have account on SourceForge), freeware browser for people to use!
It doesn't exactly have to rival big names!
I just thought that it might be nice to get a small team working on one project!

I was hoping to get a team together to start from scratch a complete internet browser!
So it looks like nobody wants to help Not even for a little project or something to do!

Well, I think many here could build a webbrowser from scratch 'alone' and what would we get by trying to build another one?

We are talking about webbrowser so I meant webbrowser, did I have to be specific?

Becuase yes, most people could build a web browser, but not one with many security patches etc.
FTP access and all of that could they?

Re: Project Internet Browser - Be Part of a team! LOOK!
I was thinking of starting an internet browser project
Did you also think of the 400 pages standards?
(X/D)HTML, XML, CSS 1/2, ...
For more check out http://www.w3.org
Or what did you want to do?
Use the IE OCX?
FTP is the easiest part.

What exactly do you mean? The types of file it can view?

I mean the web standards...
Take a look at the FireFox source code.
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...source.tar.bz2
And don't be scared of the 32 meg ;-)
Oh, and I just noticed FireFox has FTP support.

Re: Project Internet Browser - Be Part of a team! LOOK! Codename: Violet
Yes, but not complete FTP support as in, login through form you have to use:
I have seen the source and it's C++!
Also, is there no way to integrate their browser as a component, instead of IE OCX??

Users won't care.

Your definition of "complete" FTP support is a log in window?
Mail them, maybe they'll add it.

Here you go: http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/mozilla.htm

Probably because VB isn't the only language which supports Active-X.
OCX: http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/control.htm#download
Example: http://pscode.com/vb/scripts/ShowCod...59899&lngWId=1

Re: Project Internet Browser - Be Part of a team! LOOK! Codename: Violet
Look, I spent/wasted 2 years working on a VB web browser, and that was built on the IE engine. It'll be back in the future, but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for people to join you on a huge project that you obviously have no or little in-depth knowledge in.
Sorry if I offended you, but that's the way it is.

No major browser is written in VB, that's correct. But there is nothing about VB that says it has to be slow. If you code well, it is as fast as sloppy C++, if you code well, avoid using the runtime functions, and take the trouble to do inline precompiled ASM, then it can be as fast or faster than pure C++. Trouble is, the faster you want it, the effort you need to put in optimisation increases exponentially.

Rudi, I think I or we may have been a bit harsh on you, and sorry for that. I don't have the time or interest currently to join your project, but maybe, if you want, I can send you the source for one or two early versions of my browser, to get you started? There are lot out there, like the link dee-u posted; hopefully you can use them as examples of UI design etc. I know you want to make your own engine and mine is built on the Trident (IE) engine, so you could use it as example of other techniques like skinning, control positioning, sidebar and toolbar design, etc.
If you want it, PM me with your email address, and I'll email the source to you. I'm not fussed because its an older version, so the same goes for anyone else that wants to see it. I'd post it, but it's too large.
