    Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1

Anyone else got to try this out yet? About to install it now, just waiting for bloody SP2 to install on my lappy.

Proper CSS support makes Pc a happy camper. :yay:

Yucky implementation of tabbed browsing and I'm getting spammed with little "Anti-Phishing" tooltips. You can switch search to Google though, which is cool. But atm, its lost that nice feel that IE has always had

From what I understand, the CSS improvements arent in yet. It seems for the most part this first beta is just to show off tabs.

Didn't they also fix some security issues? Or is that also supposed to come in later on?

Im sure they may have some stuff fixed. Most the security work they are doing though is in Vista. And from what I am reading, they are making some major strides in user security and making it more Linux like including improving it where if you do something that requires admin priveleges it will prompt with a password. This will certainly make logging in as non-priveleged users more attractive. So we shall see.

I've seen a screen shot where the menu appears to be part of the tab. Is that a standard setting and can it be changed? I mean it looks bad and goes against every single windows style document ever printed.
I went from Netscape->IE->Firefox like I would imagine a lot of people, I wonder will IE7 be good enough to get some people from Firefox back to IE?

I doubt it. i am sure alot of people will check it out, but for the most part they will stick to Firefox. MS would have to do alot more than just some minor work. Standards support is still going to drag behind making web developers prefer Firefox. And where the developers go, the users will follow.

one of the most attractive things for me with Fx these days is that it is so easy to extend it. Like writing the Cander extension. I doubt IE will ever be that easy to extend, hence I will not move back again...

    heh yeah.

At any rate. To sum all my feelings up about IE7. It's too little too late. Microsoft, just like Netscape, let their browser lapse behind in features and will lose to a browser that is keeping up with the times.

i am not sure if I agree. Only time will show. Remember that IE was behind Netscape back in the time too. But I think they failed because the had a bussiness with Netscape. That might be the difference this time. Fx doesn't earn any money. So MS can't squize them out that way like they did with Netscape. The reason Netscape ended was becasuse suddenly no one at Netscape got paid anymore, so one morning no one came to work anymore. That won't happen to Fx, they work for the joy and to take the net back. So you might be right this time.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1

No one at Netscape got paid anymore because they were getting owned by IE. Netscape took forever to keep up to HTML support (was it 4.0? Cant recall) Then IE catered to developers and new technologies like XML while Netscape just dragged its feet. Eventually killing them.

Alot of people say its because IE was bundled into Windows as the reason Netscape died, but I dont believe that. If Netscape was worth using, people would have used it. See Firefox as a prime example.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1

Well, it was worth to use for a while, untill IE overtook them. After all it wasn't IE that found out that Java could be fun to implement in a browser. So Netscape had to have done something right at some stage.

BTW that is what irritates me the most about IE vs. Fx. IE is digged so deep into Windows (probably has a lot of modules all ready loaded before IE it self starts) that is takes much less time to start it the first time. But since I never shut down my computer so Fx is always running I don't care too much, but MS has an advantage there over anyone else on the market, no matter what app we are talking about.

Well I no longer see any speed difference in loading time for Fx over IE at home. Of course when you are on an AMD64 3200 with 1 gig of memory, you usually dont notice such things.

Well in linux I can't use IE anyway...so I don't notice it either.. And in solaris I don't even have a browser...

I downloaded the IE7 beta yesterday afternoon and played with it for a few mins before i started looking for a way to uninstall it. It lost a lot more than it gained mostly on gui stuff just the look and feel of it was bad.

BTW can you uninstall the update and how???

Wouldn't have foggiest... I think it'd be possible though.

I anyone wants to try it, PM me and I'll give you a link to download it, I don't think I'd be allowed to post it here.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1

If it's a beta, it can probably (and most likely will have to be) uninstalled. If it replaced another version of IE and you only have the new one, you may be screwed, unless they bring you back to 6 when you remove 7.
