XP Logon - Options = None

User was trying to connect to a local network at home. So - got rid of the domain. Now back at work where we need the domain - except when we click on the OPTIONS button from the logon screen nothing happens. The old domain is not listed - even the box for adding the domain names does not appear.

Tried to connect to the domain from the computer properties screen and it rejects our attempts.

am trying with an admin login but not THE admin login. And we have tried a couple of network logins that should work but the domain ignores us.

Any ideas?

Is the machine on the same subnet? If not that's probably causing the issue.

We are talking the subnet mask setting for IP/TCP? This appears to be correct.

What it really looks like is that the computer is convinced that it is on a home network where there will not be a domain setting and so it won't accept one. Have tried running the network wizard but still no go.

Thanks for the idea though -- it made us go through the IP settings and check all of that.

Your running XP Pro or Home? Did you try adding your other computer to the domain of it exists?

Yes the TCP/IP subnet. This includes the ip address and subnet mask. ie:
IP 123.123.123.1
mask 255.255.255.0
will only talk to computers with ip addresses 123.123.123.0-255

How did you 'get rid of the domain'?

XP Professional is the version of XP (service packs are in place)

If we knew how they turned off the domain - maybe we could undo - but you know how that is. They tried a bunch of things to get the network at home to work and now it won't work at the office. User is not sure what series of clicks brought us here. Gremlins?

Sounds like they may have accidentally changed it from a Domain to a Workgroup? When you dont get the domain logon
option then one doesnt exist.

It does seem to be looking for a workgroup...maybe delete the workgroup?

And I do have access to the network - I just can't get to the domain so I can get to the email server and all that other good network jazz.

I shall try to delete the workgroup --
when I change the workgroup to blank and the domain to the correct domain name it asks me to join the network. But I get an access denied error. Do I need some kind of network admin password? That seems odd as we are not changing any kind of network setting -- we just want to join an exisitng domain????

You don't need to delete the workgroup, you do however need to be a network admin to join a domain for security reasons. Did't you already try this though?

We did try but while I have admin rights on the computer - am not the network admin.

We were trying to avoid the 'reporting our trouble to the network admin' part - the primary is out of town and the secondary -- well let's just say there are better things for the secondary to be doing than yelling at us for mucking up our network settings.

Seems a pack of trouble since the computer used to be on the domain and we are trying to reconnect.

Without domain admin rights to add a system to the domain you wont be able to do it.
Guess you have to wait for the NA to do it and yell at you guys.
