Re: Get Visual Basic .NET 2003 FREE from Microsoft
I would like a copy of VB.NET for home use, to putz around with. Is there a freeware (legal) version for home use/non deployment? I've ordered VS 05, but it looks like I'll have to purchase a DVD drive to get it up and running.

You can get the SDK (which comes with the compiler) for free from MS. But the IDE costs. So, it's technically free to use & work with .NET (VB or C#) but you have to use a text editor to do all your editing.

Which would not be worth the headache of NOT having the IDE. It only makes your job a million times easier. DVD drives are pretty cheap now. Here is one for 15 bucks with 4 dollar shipping. (not sure if you live in the US or not) Doesn't get much lower than that, but who knows.
You can even get a DVD burner for around 30-40 bucks and up.
P.S. the threads original topic about getting it free has long since expired.

Get the VS 2005 Express Editions and start working on those. I installed it just yesterday and am already brimming with questions.

Nah, just order VS2005 Beta for free and it gets delivered to your door a week later.
Thats what I did. I was so impressed that I bought the company.
I don't live here any more.
