Can you you download Win XP SP2 to hd rather than install it? Further, I'm trying to download form a WinNT computer and apparently it can't be downloaded to a folder.

there's a couple of options here the download and deploy is probably the one you want, but if you can stand the wait there's always the free CD
Edit:
BTW the cd used to be free probalby still is.
Well, it doesn't allow saving to disk, it automatically detects I'm running Win98 and tries to install the patches for it. So the CD is the option, thanks.

I tried but it was taking a looong time for the first few kb until it timed out. I'm now trying a second time.

Oh, that's why... I thought I could download it by sheer telepathy but today wasn't in the mood for it.

The second attempt didn't time out -maybe my Firefox is configured by default to not give up- but I've left it overnight and only 6 kb had made it to my hd.

Microsoft releases redistributables for all it's service packs, just look for the redistributable form. TechNet is usually your best bet for that type of stuff.
I use Microsoft Visual Basic 2005. (Therefore, most code samples I provide will be based around the .NET Framework v2.0, unless otherwise specified)

Your link has led me to http://www.vbforums.com/newreply.php...eply&p=2036299 and that is the same place I was trying to download it from yesterday. I've tried anew but the speed is about 0.1 kb/sec while a typical download speed from my computer is about 500 kb/sec. I wonder what's wrong with that site.

My link doesn't go there, that link points to a reply to topic thing.
mendhak's link is the direct one, and I strongly doubt it's Microsoft's site cause I'm getting full speed (~155K B/s). Check the connections at your end, maybe reboot your computer and try again

I've tried on another computer on the same LAN and it's the same story. Could it be a proxy-related issue...?

I think its definately your connections mate, getting full d/l here...
Try downloadfing from another PC on a different connection (not your LAN) and save it to disc, this might be the only way to go...
My connection had never given me any trouble downloading large (ca. 200 Mb) files. Something must be wrong with the site, my company's central server or both. But never mind, I'll try elsewhere.

At any rate I've been talking to some folks who've warned me against installing SP2 as it supposedly may be a source of trouble. Do you guys think there's something in that?

Sorry to dig up old articles, but it's been in my inbox waiting for me to respond, short answer, no. Ignore ANYONE who tells you not to install the service pack. It did cause a few troubles for some people, but that was mainly because they tweaked their computer or had some faulty drivers, had something running etc. while it was installing.
For almost everybody else, it works fine. Install ASAP.

Well, I've tried once again to download it and this time it's been successful, after a number of failed attempts that had timed out. So I'll try to install this evening.

I was just wondering, I assume it can easily and safely be unistalled in case of trouble...

Yes it can. If you are worried, create a system restore point, disable all running programs, this includes antivirus apps, IM clients etc. and don't use it while it's installing. It really shouldn't be an issue unless you have a majorly tweaked system, or you are using crappy drives which may cause it to fail.

Leading cause of failure is not installing all available updates (that apply) before installing SP2. I had a problem because my SoundBlaster wasn't up to date. Ended up taking a few days on the phone to get things straightened out.
My problem was that I couldn't go to Windows Update (OH NO!
I ended up talking to 3 different techs, and they told me the same thing.
I called Creative Labs, got the latest drivers, Uninstalled the device, re-installed with the new drivers, and the problem was solved. This was after the 2nd download and third install of SP2.
Well, I installed the SP and so far so good, I hope I won't run into any trouble in the future. For now I'll mark the thread as resolved
