[Resolved] - Issue with my router DLink 704

I have a problem with my router DLink 704 and I'm out of ideas now to correct the problem.

It work fine for my lan and for surfing on the net. But some sites get really laggy. One of them is windowsupdate. I downloaded an update of 1 meg in 15 minutes. (I have a dsl a 3Mbits / sec) That's not normal

A few sites that get really laggy because of the router.
    Windowsupdate
    hotmail
    all ftp access

I've plug the external modem directly in the computer and all test was running at full speed.
I've also test the cables, (both one, from the modem to the router and from the router to the pc) and all cables are ok
I've try upgrading and downgrading the firmware of the router
My windowsXp is a fresh install w sp2 (I've also the same problem with win2k sp4)
I've also try the dmz host, nothing changed.

But bittorrent work flawlessly, at least

I don't know what to do to find what's wrong with the router.
As I said, I can surf on most web site but some like windowsupdate or hotmail are really laggy.

    Any news ideas?
    Thks

Could be a DNS problem, firewall, NAT...
    Are you using DHCP?
Here's a site to test your connection: http://nyc.speakeasy.net/

Re: Issue with my router DLink 704

    Yes I'm using DHCP

I'm now testing with a DLink 604 and the problem is worse than the 704. I have the same symptoms but for everything trying accessing the web! Not only windowsupdate, hotmail of my ftp but everything!

The only way I'm able to connect now is to bypass my router and connect the modem directly to the computer!

For the line speed, when I bypass my router, I'm running at full speed. I've try it with my ftp and my connection was running at the maximum that it could.

Now I'm really confuse, I've got a more recent router and I got worse results.

Re: Issue with my router DLink 704

-TPM-, I've tryed your test but it's only a speed test, not a diagnostic, while it may help in some others tests, right now it's not what I'm looking for.

    Anyway here's the results:

    2428 kbps for download
    651 kbps for the upload

Both results are near optimal performances

You could see my problem that way:

Internet Connection - Router 704 - Computer = problems win update etc
Internet Connection - Router 604 - Computer = problems on everything
    Internet Connection - Computer = everything fine's!

So I doubt the connection is bad and I can't use the last option because more than one computer must access internet.

    Why me ? eheh

The DLINK site has diagnostic tool available. If you have the latest firmware, maybe you should just reset the router to factory defaults? What ISP are you using?

Re: Issue with my router DLink 704

I've already try resetting the router with the default values.
    and it didn't work.

I'm connecting using radioactif / aei

What I have found however is there an hidden page configuration where we can change the MTU. And i've lower it to 1024 instead of 1492. I would have love to have it to 576 for the internet standard but couldn't.

Anyway changing this number solved my problem!
Don't ask my why this work. I don't understand everything perfectly. It sound like packets are too large for the router and it made him become zombie, something like that.

Thanks both of you for taking time answering me.
