Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
Visual Basic is not Free. So the simple version would be no. But if you are interested to look at the beta version of VS 2005 then I think* that one is free. You can download it from MSs pages. I have posted the link a couple of times on this forum. So you can search here for it too.
*I havn't read the license, so you might have to have VS from before to do it, but not sure though.

I've been programming with VB for 25 years. Started with VB4 16bit Pro, VB5 Pro, VB6 Pro/Enterprise and now VB3 Pro. But I'm no expert, I'm still learning.

I think you can download eary versions of VB like 1-4, don't know. But, I doubt micros0ft cares if your using ms-dos to run an old version of VB .

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
Yes they have, it is in the "Extended Support" phase.
You can still buy a licence for VB6 (admittedly by "downgrading" an equivalent VB.Net licence), but as far as I know you cannot get the media for VB6 from Microsoft.

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
you cannot download such software as its illegal
you must purchase it
surely your school has vb6? they must have some funding for students? even a student discount from school to buy vb6?
vs.net beta's are free ONLY if you are an msdn subscriber or a partner but you must have a previous license of vs.net
personally - its late to understand/learn vb6 - best thing to do is start using .NET technology which has vb.net/C#/J#/Visual C++.NET
you are honestly really wasting time if you want to do development in VB6 as its pretty old and is almost on its final legs... maybe about another 3 years tops left before its completly discontinued

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
you sure about this? I will confirm tomorrow from my colleagues at licensing but im sure you require a previous version of VS.NET (non beta) in order to do the beta testing.....
confusing atm - MSDN subscribers licensing etc.. differs from non subscribers, bah... ill ask

And it seems you've tried the illegal venues.

Yeah you can download the betas for free. Not sure about the full visual studio systems but you can download the express editions for free. I've noticed the express editions actually have almost everything we are used to in the vs6 days. So getting the standard for $199 or the team for $799 doesn't seem worth it.

You need a pretty good machine - the IDE is kinda sluggish on my machine.

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
Try here. not for VB6 but for VB.NET, C#,C++ comes with a full IDE Form Designer eveything. all you need to do is download the .NETFramework from MS then get the IDE

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
The only free one with no trial *stuff* is the new VB.NET 2005 Express Editions. I wouldn't waste time looking for VB5/6 anyways cuz those are way out of date.

Hold up! the express editions didn't require me to become a subscriber! If he can find them, go for it. I might have them somewhere...
He might be able to backorder a PC magazine that has them.

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
VB.Net is free and has always been so. Visual Studio however which is MS integrated development environment for all their .Net languages and VC++ is not free however. But you can still download the compiler and the framework for free and develop your apps in any text editor.

Re: can i download visual basic anywhere?
Hey, Microsoft is offering Visual Studio 2005 express editions free for a year. I downloaded them without bieng and MSDN subscriber and they work fine (vb, c#, c++, j#) go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/default.aspx

i personally have seen visual studio 2005 on the internet for download, and well let me just tell you, its there and i would not recomend it though. I use vb6 and I probably should upgrade but i dont want to spend money or learn any more than i have too.

If you are new, then I suggest you go for VB.net (the 2005 Express Edition). I guess it would be better to adapt to the future of VB rather than the past, even if this forum seem to have a majority of VB6 people here.

There are pros and cons in switching to .NET. You may want to take a look at the following discussion to learn something more about it:
