Resolved [RESOLVED] Question about Visual Basic 6

I am always running into applications that require VB6 compatibility and I only have VB5, my question is, is this just hype or is there that much of a difference ?

Also is the only legal way to get VB6 is in a place like E-Bay?

There are some differences, but most of it is the same, from what I've heard. Jacob Roman seems to do OK, and he's running W98 with VB5.

You can get VB6 from E-Bay, but watch out. Sometimes you'll get the Learning Edition, or some other bunk.

As long as you are thinking about upgrading, why not move up to 'Net? It isn't really that bad to learn, although I've been at it for only a few days. A lot of stuff is actually starting to make sense.

Of course, I'd wait until Net 2005 is released. I got Net 2003 thru a promo, so it didn't cost me anything. I hear good things about VS 2005, and I really want to get C# also.

I just found out today that there is MONO and MONODEVELOPER which is a free version of the 'Net compilers/IDE. Haven't looked into where to get it, though. It's probably just a Googld away.

You can get VB6 from Microsoft, but you have to buy Visual Studio .NET and then get a downgrade licence.

Re: Question about Visual Basic 6

If you're newish to VB, forget 6 because trying to learn it is only doing yourself a disservice. VB6 is now in extended support or something of that nature. It's waaaay too old and has some serious limitations that effectively limit it's usefulness especially compared to .NET (such as multithreading).

The new version of Visual Basic, Visual Basic 2005 is due November, 7th I think, which is most exciting, if you can wait, I'd strongly recommend that to everyone because it is very good and saves you forking out for .NET 2003 when a much better version is just around the corner.
I use Microsoft Visual Basic 2005. (Therefore, most code samples I provide will be based around the .NET Framework v2.0, unless otherwise specified)
