Suggestion - Book review forum
Hi,
I've seen alot of people ask about which book is good for this or that, and had similar questions myself. From a n00b point of view, a forum specifically to review tech books might be nice to have around..
Just a thought,
Bill

Could you explain how it would work?

Re: Suggestion - Book review forum
Uhmm.. OK, I'll take a crack at it..
Title of thread would be the name of the book, author, and publishing date, like:
"Microsoft Access - Inside Out", John Viescas(MS Press) 2004
Develop a simple rating system and Have that be in your post reviewing it, such as
- Mediocre
- Has some good info, but may be hard to follow, or contain incorrect info, etc.
- Average book, ok for reference, but not great for learning
- Great book if you need to learn something
- Exceptional - Everyone in the field should read this book.
Then your review would follow, such as:
This book is great for anyone who develops MS Access applications exclusively, or needs to know every aspect of them for uses in making VB applications. There is a decent chapter on using VBA for applications, but I would not reccomend this book for a casual user of Access, as it is more in depth than most people would need.
Then, subsequent reviewers use the same thread for their review of the same book.

Re: Suggestion - Book review forum
While this sounds great in concept, it is hard to make work. In most cases, reviews can be found on Amazon and other 'book selling" sites.
We do reviews on Codeguru and they are rarely submitted -- even when I give people books (for free in exchange for the review), we hardly ever get the reviews. As such, I think this would end up being a pretty dead forum -- or would end up with biased reviews. For example, I'd love to recommend Teach Yourself the C# Language in 21 Days for C#....

w00t, have you given out books for free over there. I knew I used the wrong forum. I would have even read "Teach Yourself the C# Language in 21 Days" and reviewed it if I got it for free. But I am stuck here with "A Complete Guid to C#" and no review in stead..:

Well, it was worth mentioning, anyways.
By the way, the CodeGuru book reviews are.. a bit of a mess. Kind of all just thrown together. Though I can see how inactive they are, and what you mean.

Re: Suggestion - Book review forum
Well, I'm glad I read this thread, I was about to start a book review thread in the Classic VB forums where everyone could post reviews then I could link to it in my sig for people new to VB. Brad seems to have a lot of experience in the area so I guess I'll let it drop. It does sound good in concept though

What about just starting one in the CC section. GUess you are not getting any ratings if that is what you are after. But at least you get to see if people will follow up. You can lay out the rules, and make other follow them.
