    Mike i agree with you on the latter but what is wrong with just wanting to be the violinist and not the conductor?

    szlamany could you suggest other things that one could do that are still within the IT industry? Technical writing comes to mind.

    I just read an article in the newspaper recently stating the out-of-college IT people were looking to become IT consultants - so they could slot into a company/customer at a higher level - not a programmer as much a specialist in a certain area.

    That's how we make it in this business...

    Being just the violinist means you might not get a level of respect you deserve - that you can be replaced - that the people who own the concert house actually make the money - and you might not see your fair share of it...
