You don't have to rep someone just because they helped you. I've rep'ed people before just because I really liked the answer they gave to someone else's question or because they posted a pretty neat piece of code in response to a question.
I do this a lot too. At least in the sections where I am a moderator. Because I read all threads every day. So if I find something interesting that I didn't know, or someone helped somone with a big problem, then I give them a rating. I also have my own bookmark folder in Fx, so if I see someone that really deserves a rep, but I can't give it to them it at the moment because of my spread, then I save the post as a bookmark in that folder, and get back to it later on.
