    MySQL Resource id error

    hi guys, I'm having trouble getting the newest member from my database. I've encountered this a few times and its doing my head in.

    Code:
    	//get newest user
    	$newest_query = "SELECT * FROM users ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 1";
    	$newest_result = mysql_query($newest_query, $connection);
    	$got_newest_user = mysql_fetch_array($newest_result);
    	$total_users = $got_newest_user['id'];
    	$newest_user = $got_newest_user['username'];
    Weird thing is I try all my queries in php myadmin and it gives the results perfectly, however when executing the queries from site level, it just returning 'Resource id'. Please help.
