Burn mark on my screen? {resolved}
I have a burn mark on my screen, and it seems to get bigger and bigger. I don't know why it's there. I know about ghosting, but my screen saver is usually running if my computer is idle. The only thing I can think of, is how I run it all the time. It's a laptop, and I use it for everything: gaming, programming etc. It stays pretty hot because it's on about 6-8 hours a day.
Any suggestions/comments?

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
Mine is used prolly double that, and has no problem. Sounds like you have a screen going bad. Who made mfg the unit? The equipment might not be top of the line. I have a pretty new HP, so I expect it to last for a long time.

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
It's a Dell inspiron 600m pentium M at 1.5Ghz.
So should I contact these homos and tell them to fix this thing?

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
Actually, it probably is a screen going bad. The burn mark keeps getting bigger and bigger. I think it was kind of small about a month ago, but now it's at a decent size.

How old is the screen? LCDs only have so many hours of life.

Is it under warrenty? If so, take it back and get them to replace the screen.

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
DELL is very good about replacing LCD flat screens and repairing laptops.
I've seen hardware tech's from DELL show up at a customer site and replace a mother board on a laptop...
Don't wait - call them now.
I had them replace a LCD flat screen in our office that had a vertical black lines appear - even out of warranty they did it!

Thanks guys. I just found my warranty. It only has about 20 days left, so I got lucky. I'm going to email them right now. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
Google seems to say 50000 to 60000 hours of life to an LCD screen.
Which is 6 or 7 years of being on all the time...
Seems better than I used to get from a CRT before it went yukky...

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
Aah, so I'm 4 years safe. Consumers usually buy a laptop every 2-3 years (at least I would), so no worries there.
Thanks.

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
Usually Dell, HP, and Sony laptops have a 1 year warrenty. Replacing a screen is expensive. anywhere from $400 - $700, depending
on model and size. We are HP & Sony authorized warrenty repair centers. so I see allot of systems come in for repair. People do
the darned things to their systems without thinking.

Re: Burn mark on my screen?
With DELL all you need is the service tag - they have all the information needed to cover the laptop if it's under warranty.
Don't you have SUPPORT.DELL.COM under your DELL favorites in IE?

Cool!
But that means you have to replace it yourself? If you open your laptop yourself wont that void your warrenty?

I sure wouldn't want to ever open my laptop - like I said before I watched someone do it once. Two dozen screws later - each one a different length - then you have to remember where to put them back

Re: Burn mark on my screen? {resolved}
Thats what I am talking about. I am very surprised that Dell would send you the screen and not direct you to a Authorized Warrenty
repair center or at least have you send in you laptop.

Re: Burn mark on my screen? {resolved}
hehe. That's what I was worried about. I took one look at my screen right now, and I was thinking OOOOMMMMGGGG how do you take that thing apart?
Oh well, who knows, it could be fun. I'll contact them again about the waranty being void if I open it.
I too was surprised at their response. It was just so abrupt. I mean, I've dealt with Gateway tech support before about a bad fan, and those guys were so annoying that I just gave up.
Anyways, I send them an email and let you guys know what they say.
By the way, thanks for bringing that up.

Re: Burn mark on my screen? {resolved}
I would hope that they are going to send a service tech to your location to make the swap - that's why I've seen them to at one of my customer sites...
The customer got the replacement in the mail...
Called DELL...
They sent a "roaming" tech to do the swap...
Good luck!
