Can new feature be added to reps system?

One thing that comes to mind is to thank person that reputated you: say it could be a button (right next to comments) "Thank You" or something of that nature and when clicked a small message (via PM) will be sent anonymously to whoever ... It could also be use to appologize for something you said for any negative rep (if any and if you wish to do so).
Wonder how do you guys feel about this ?

    Thanks for reading.

I understand where you are coming from, but as you implied yourself, any template would be pretty much worthless - as there is such a range of things you might want to say.

I don't think that there would be any point in having it anonymous, as any comments you have would be related to the reputation points/comment in question.

In your reputation list you have the link to the persons profile, so it's only a couple of links to send a PM. It keeps it more meaningful if you've taken the time to do it, as most people wont.

I think it's probably best to keep things as they are.

    Where would that be ???
As far as I know there is no way to know who gave you that rep unless you have mod/admin privileges ...

Re: Can new feature be added to reps system?

I hadn't thought of that, what do you get in your user CP under "Latest reputation received"?

    I get these columns:
    Thread (links to the thread)
    Date
Posted By (links to their profile)
    Comment

Note that the list needs to be expanded to see any of this - use the arrow on the right of the section header to shrink/expand it.

Must be one of those mod things. We don't get the posted by column, just the other three.

Shaggy, as you know, from the Reps I give, I sign the end of the comment with " - RobDog888". This lets the
non-Mod user know who gave the Rep. I like to think of it as a courtesy to the member receiving the Rep. You usually dont
end letters or emails without a signature.

If all members did this then everyone would know where/who the Rep came from (unless they want to remain unknown )

    I never knew that!

Does it apply to PowerPosters too? A few people have sent me PM's after I've rated them, maybe they've guessed because of my comments.

Nope, its a Mod permission to view the 'Posted By' column.

Either the members knew it was you by your signature or you were the only one in the thread.

I still think that regardless of the type of Rep, you forum name should be auto appended to each one.

I liked that idea in the start too. But after thinking about it for a while I am not so sure anymore. It will be easier to give -ve back to a person if you are mad because you got one (at least for some persons here). If a good comment about why you gave a -ve in the first place would probably solve most of the "revenge" problem. But since we have never stested it, we won't know for sure. Maybe that column could be added for a few weeks, and we can see how it goes. And if the "revenge"-theory proves to be true, then we can turn it off again.

Moderators and admins have access to who posted ratings -- so they are not anonymous.

I can already tell you the 'revenge' factor is an issue. Even without names a few people have tried to peg others who they -thought- rated them negatively. Best to leave it as it is.

Lightbulb Re: Can new feature be added to reps system?

If I really cared that much about ratings I would think twice about posting to this thread but I feel (and others it seems too) that the system is not a good one. But maybe I just don't fully understand (or appreciate) how ratings work.
With time, these reputations will help the "star posters" rise and the people who only provide noise to become visible as well.
What good does this accomplish? If you frequent the forums enough, you have some idea of the "noise" posters so you can ignore them if you wish. This doesn't stop them from posting more and more noise. In fact, negative ratings may encourage posting more junk.

Star posters do deserve recognition...and again, frequent visitors know who these are. CornedBee springs to mind. I (and most of us) have gotten more help from him that we can remember and he's never asked for any recognition -- but he's gotten it. Perhaps that's a good example of how the system SHOULD work. Then you have the 'Please rate my post' in some sigs and I'm not condemning that because sometimes new members may not remember to rate or understand what the rating system is. But again, what good does it do to know that someone has a 50+ or 100+ reputation? You don't get to go to a specific member to ask a question unless you PM them. So you may encourage more PM-ing than actual forum participation. And what about a member that has, say 50+ and 50- reputations? Would it look like they just had a < 10 reputation as a member without any feedback? They may have 50 legitimate ratings and 50 bad ones. Does that mean they deserve less help than anyone else?

You should be able to see who left you feedback. The benefits of that would outweigh the negative outcome. The worry of it is having a lot of negative posts go back and forth but members could be restricted from posting threads and reputation if they abuse it. It could be the same as Ebay - You see who left you a feedback and you have the right to respond to their comments...

And I like RhinoBull's idea of a button to thank or apologize.

    Just my two cents.

Re: Can new feature be added to reps system?

I know this isn't completely on the topic at hand, but I think it would be useful for everyone to be able to see the rates/comments made on each post, rather than just the poster. So if you click Rate This Post, then it should show all the ratings made so far in that window.

And, as wey97 said, if you have say +20 and -15 rep points then it looks like you are a newbie because you are left where you started with 5 points. Maybe in the little caption over the ratings icons it should say the count of the member's positive and negative ratings.

Not always safe. Though I've begun signing my rates after this thread and others, I have given +ives in threads that I did not post in.
