Suggestion or request for a new forum
I see more and more DirectX question posted in the General VB forum, I of course know about the Game and Graphics forum but since DirectX is so much more then that wouldn't it be possible to create a DirectX forum?

Yes, I have seen them too lately. You mean something like another SubForum in the Games forum?

I don't know if it has to be a sub forum, I just think that DirectX is worthy of it's own forum since it handles so much more then graphics and can be used for much more things besides games.

True, but is there really enough DX traffic to support a full top level forum? I think a subforum may be better
in the Games and Graphics Programming Forum since it also covers Graphics programming.

Me and Electroman talked a lot about this about 8-9 months ago. I think I even got Electroman to ask Brad. I can't remember what he said then (or if he said something at all). But actualy most of the questions in the games and graphics section is actualy about DX too. I just counted and about 50% of the last 40 threads are about DX, the rest is API/Math/OpenGL/and general game programming. I am nearly more afraid that the graphics programming section will die out if a sub section is made for DX.
But I guess the problem Mr. Andersson is referring too, is that they don't see a DX section, they will post it in the Classic section. And if we make a DX sub section, no one except those who are familiar with the games/graphics section will know about it. So the problem with DX questions in the Classic section will still be there.
But if there should be a sub section or a new root-section I would have voted for it to be both for DX and OGL. Not that we have many OGL questions, but they are pretty familiar. And many questions can actualy be answered by someone that only know DX and not OGL even if the question is about OGL.
An other problem, is that there is a lot of questions that starts out like a general graphics or game problem, and the thread ends with how to do it in DX, or in general where to start DX programming. And I guess they should be moved? ? If so I guess Electroman and ?Plenderj? would have a lot more to do.. But it is their job, so I guess they can handle it..
But the most important thing, is that the DX threads gets moved to the game/graphics section or maybe a new DX section. So they can get resolved. I doubt many of the DX gurus are in the Classic section answering threads, even if I have seen JR in there a couple of times.
Summary:
I think it starts to get time to make a new DX/OGL section. Since about 50% of the questions is DX in the game section, and since more then 50% of the FAQ in there is about DX/OGL/HLSL. But it will be up to Brad or Marty or something to decide if it happens, and to decide if it will be a root level section or a subsection. But I won't hold it against them if they won't make it happen. Because there is a small problem. And that is that nearly half the questions is in C/C++ and not VB/VB.NET, and the games/graphics section is in the VB "folder" here on VBF.
Thats at lest my 200000 cents...

Re: Suggestion or request for a new forum
I can see your point because things like DirectShow don't exactly fall in the Games & Graphics Section but I'd like to state they are welcome. Making another section/subsection for DirectX questions may cause a few problems though. like people might start using it for there games questions because there game uses DirectX but these types of questions are better fitted to the Games Section.
I can understand saying not to make any new forums doesn't really help the issue at hand but how about when people do ask Dx questions in the Classic section people post to let them know thier question would be better suited in the Games & Graphics Area. If they seem unsure by the title best way to put it is that the Games & Graphics Area has a lot of regulars that are familiar with Dx so will be more likely to give a quick & Accurate response .
When your thread has been resolved please edit the original post in the thread ( )

Re: Suggestion or request for a new forum
One thing that I noticed was the the description for G & GP does state DirectX, but seems that it goes un-noticed.
How about just rewording the description for better clarity (if possible since its quite good as it is)?
My 3.5 cents
