What is your opinion?
I have to make the most difficult decision here (feels like it) and although I already made up my mind, I thought I’m going to post this one, and give it a day and sleep on this.
OK. Lemme give you some background:
Coming from a typical western country where MS dominates. Started out in VB6, moved on to VB.Net, and just started to get along nicely. Never worked on anything else … only MS products and technologies. Down south ppl talk about opensource as if it some crazy idea to bypass MS, and will never work.
Moved to Asian country, and started job hunting. Oh hell, seems my VB.Net is useless, and even C# would have helped me nothing. Nearly a month later everything start happening at the speed of light. Really, this is from Friday to Monday!!!
Got 2 offers: (real offers, not possible offers)
(1) A company willing to invest in me by employing me and giving me the time and resources needed to learn Python (Java later), work on stuff like Linux, Apache, and some other….complete new world, all in open source. Great people, small, but really promising looking company.
(2) Offer to WORK AT MICROSOFT!!! Yeah dude, I’ve been for an interview at MS, and after a grueling interview (not programming wise, more I had to convince them the culture difference between me and my co-workers will not be a problem) I heard this morning I was accepted. This will be about automating some MS product using C# (dunno how confidential it is, so will leave out the details).
So what I do now? Get to learn a whole new world of software development (opensource) and stax of new stuff, or get to learn some C#, but at MS.
Pay, benefits, etc are all the same. In my mind…opensource. Actually already made up my mind, as I wanted to do it for a long time, but where I come from…huh uh.
What do you think?

Re: What is your opinion?
Moving from VB.NET to C# won't be as painful plus an opportunity to work for Microsoft is hardly one you can turn down IMHO.
Let us know what you do.

Re: What is your opinion?
The MS option might give you the future option of moving around, different departments different countries back home even. But will you be just one of hundreds.
Small companies are great in that you get to do everything, but they have a tendency to go out of business.
It would appear that the smaller company will provide you with a better skillset in terms of future employment.

I couldn't agree with this more. I've had an opportunity to work with Microsoft Consulting on two prior occasions, but never for Microsoft itself.
I'd go for it!

Re: What is your opinion?
Just see now I left out one bit....I will be working at Microsoft, but not FOR Microsoft.....but for an outsourcing company. Will be working as a normal MS employee at their location though.
Still Dunno....DeadEyes sounds more logical to me. But then....Who don't want to say "I worked at Microsoft"? This is hard, it really is.
aaaaaargh...after weeks of job hunting I should be out there having a party to celebrate..now the one headache replaced the other!!
Also must add. Now travelling to MS will take me about 2 to 2.5 hours (yeah 4-5 hours per day). At the other company about 1 hour. Moving closer is not an option, as we allready bought a flat and moving there in a few months which is even a bit further

Re: What is your opinion?
Nonsense some ppl talk just to get some posting points....lol (just kidding)
For breakfast I decided MS, by lunch it's Opensource.....Gonna play best out of three, and whoever I feel like by dinner get themselves a genius....
Another option, stop worrying, get up monday and go to the company I feel like going to.....
Well, if I don't take MS, farewell ppl (you don't have python forum), remember me as the one that told MS to bugger off (Geez, that will be a cool reputation..maybe this Steve brother will hire me one day)

Ok ppl, thanx for your input...I decided to go for the opensource company.
Many reasons, too many to mention.
Guess I will still be around. Company also uses Java, but the newbies gonna do Python, and knowing myself, I will join the boffins soon.
Cheers!

Re: What is your opinion?
Changed my mind again after receiving the full job description, and realized, 5 years from now having "Worked at MS" are gonna count more that working for "Codehammer software" ,or something, no matter what language I used.
Also the JD sounds awesome (must say I'm scared to sh%%ts)
So will just be a pain in the C# forum from now on, hopefully expanding on my poor little 68 post, seeing that's the gauge one get measured around here.....can i get a extra 10 points for passing MS's interviews?
Thanx for your opinion ppl.
